5 Quick and Easy Tips for Preparing Your Living Room for a Business Get Together

By: Jessica Ackerman

When you work from home, sometimes you have to rearrange your home to accommodate business events. One such event might be a social mixer for other business people in your area for networking and marketing. If you are hosting such a gathering, the thought of cleaning and arranging your home can be overwhelming. Instead of fretting over the tiny details, try the five quick and easy tips below to get your home ready for a successful networking event.

1. Cover
Having children often means that their clutter can control the house if you let it. Instead of panicking about where everything will go at the last minute, toss the toys in the toy bin and cover it with the lid. Turn that covered box into a quick side table by placing a small tablecloth over it. Your guests will be able to put their drinks down and will be none the wiser that you threw everything into the box at the last minute.

2. Hide
If the items are too big to put in a box and cover with the lid, hide them in other parts of the house. Your bedroom and storage closets are fair game for temporary storage options. While you will have to remove the items after the party is over, by hiding things in the closet or bedroom, your home will at least appear neat and organized to your guests.

3. Group the Furniture
When you are setting up the living room for your guests, create grouped areas of chairs and benches. This will allow people to sit and get to know one another over coffee and dessert. In networking, the opportunity to sit down face to face with new contacts is important, so be sure to provide areas for your guests to do that.

4. Quick Clean
Doing a quick clean of your house means only attacking the areas that your guests will seeing or using. Start at the front of the house or the door where people will be entering and create a plan. The foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen and guest bathroom are going to be the main areas that need to be cleaned and straightened. Wipe down door handles, remove smudges from walls and give those rooms a quick, but effective cleaning. Disinfecting or baby wipes are especially good quick cleaning tools for just about every room.

5. Something Smells
Something should smell good, that is. Light aromatic candles and spray air freshener if need be. If you are baking or cooking for the event, chances are that the smell of baking cookies is going to fill the house and provide a welcoming aroma for guests. In order to make sure that there are no unusual odors in your home, go outside for a few minutes and come back in after breathing fresh air. You may be surprised at what your nose picks up.

Arranging and preparing your home for guests is always challenging, especially when you have small children underfoot. Do your best to make sure that your home is projecting the professional image you want to have in the local business community.
