A Baby Sling: Oh, What a Thing!

By: Cerise Nichol

A New Baby Means New Challenges
A new baby brings many changes into a household. They have long been referred to as "little bundles of joy" and they certainly bring more joy to life than can be put into words. But, they also bring more work than you could imagine and it can seem quite disproportionate to their size! After mom takes a few weeks to recover physically from childbirth and to enjoy coddling and getting to know her new little sweetheart the time comes when she has to get back to doing all the things she had to do before the baby was born. This can be a challenge especially if baby needs to be held a lot or if mom is choosing "attachment parenting".

And Then There's the Guilt
In the past mom was forced to either let all the housework go and hold the baby or let the baby cry and clean the house. Either way, mom ends up feeling exhausted and guilty. It almost seems as finding balance between these important aspects of life is out of the question. Of course the baby is more important than the dusting and vacuuming, but the rest of the family needs to eat once in a while and it might be nice to at least be able to see the floor!

A Baby Sling Brings Freedom
The solution to this dilemma is a baby sling. A baby sling allows baby to be held close to mom's body while mom is free to do other things from walking to running errands to cleaning house and cooking meals. The baby sling puts an end to the guilt and gives mom the best of both worlds. Mom can even nurse the baby while she stirs the soup and then sits down to read a good book!

Finding Your Own Style
There are several different styles and a vast multitude of fabrics in slings to choose from. You want to find the one that works best for you. The sling should be comfortable for both mom and baby, make both feel secure (you won't accomplish much if you feel like baby is going to fall out) and of course it should be machine washable (you never know what's going to get on it!)

Wrapping it Up
Having a new baby is a wonderful and amazing thing. Being able to give 100% to your baby and still take care of yourself and the rest of the family is an amazing and liberating feeling. A baby sling makes doing all you need to do as a new mom just a little bit easier.
