Beginning Basics for the Feng Shui Novice

By: Jessica Ackerman

The Basis of Feng Shui

One of the main concepts of Feng Shui is the flow of energy, known as "chi", that runs through everything. The purpose of Feng Shui is finding ways to optimize and take advantage of the flow of positive chi. The same types of arrangements that facilitate the flow of energy are also complimentary to how people tend to positively respond to their surroundings. Feng Shui teaches us the optimal methods of arrangement to facilitate positive energy flow, but it also teaches that you should pay attention to the feelings that are generated from the positioning and colors of objects, as well as our overall surroundings.

Utilizing the Flow of a Living Space

One way of imagining how the positive energy might flow through your home or other living space is to imagine water flowing in through the main entrance. Pay attention to whether the water would flow freely throughout the home, or whether it would become trapped in certain areas. These areas where water would become trapped are also the same areas where the flow of positive energy would be stopped or slowed down. Often these areas can be improved by re-arranging the furnishings, or by removing areas of clutter or unnecessary objects. Another way of improving the flow of positive energy is to arrange furniture in circular patterns as opposed to angles. You can experiment with different arrangements, until you perceive an optimal flow.

The Elements of Fung Shui

There are five different elements in Fung Shui. These elements can be used to help attract the proper type of energy, and to create overall harmony. The element of water is usually represented by the colors of blue and black, and is associated with the north area. Water is usually considered to be connected to a person's career. Fire is represented by the color red, which is a very powerful color, and is associated with the south area. Fire is a passionate element, which is often associated with recognition. The element of earth represents nourishment and stability, and is represented by colors such as light yellow and beige. It occupies the northeast and southwest areas. Wood is represented by brown and green, and brings growth and abundance, located in the east and southeast areas. The element of metal can bring clarity and efficiency, represented by white, gray and metallic colors. Metal occupies the north area.

Using the Fung Shui Elements

There are many ways to incorporate the elements of Fung Shui into your home. You can choose colors that attract the types of energy that you desire, or add accessories or art to your home that accentuates the Fung Shui elements. The overall goal is to achieve a feeling of positive energy within your home that enhances your life.
