Brain Games for preschoolers- Jane Kemp & Clare Walters

By: Dominique Goh

Being a parent of toddlers it is sometimes very exhausting thinking of ways to educationally occupy my boys time. Sometimes I simply run out of idea of creative tasks that I can do with them.

This book by Jane Kemp & Clare Walters has many different activities which I can carry out that does not require expensive toys or educational material.

This book is divided into 7 sections which are listed as
- Time to talk
- count with me
- pencil and paper
- hitting the right note
- can you remember
-what a puzzle
- get moving

Speech development is focused in the chapter on a time to talk. I personally feel that it is very important to spend time talking and listening to your child. It is a fun and easy way to improve the bond that you have between parent and child. It is also a chance for your child to learn how speech is developed.

The child is introduced to the letters of the alphabet, songs and games through rhymes, listening to instructions and learning how to express themselves through speech. Through play and games related to speech children are though how to verbalise their feelings, and learn what is good behaviour which should be modeled.

Using their imagination kids will be able to be creative in their play and learn how to socalise with other kids.

In the count with me section- Kids are taught Maths and how to count. They will learn how to categories and do simple addition and subtraction through play. Children also learn how to be systematic and follow instructions.

Other sections in the book cover right brain training through mind mapping, Rhythm and movement through music, physical development through moving around and micro motor movement through the use of pencil and paper games.

It is a very comprehensive book which has a wide selection of games aimed developing your child's overall development. I definately recommend parents to pick up this book if they are running out of ideas on how to entertain your child.
