Characteristics of an Entrepreneur

By: Laurie Neumann

Have you wondered if you have the characteristics to become a successful entrepreneur?

The trend today is toward people wanting to be an entrepreneur. And why not? It offers fulfillment, flexibility and freedom.

Let’s look at some of the characteristics of an entrepreneur that are important to success.

• Motivation – you need to be self-motivated as you will not have a boss looking over your shoulder to make sure you get your work done. You’re the boss and need to find the motivation within yourself.
• Willing to invest – there will be some financial investment in a business. It doesn’t have to be a big amount, especially with an online business, but you must be willing to invest what is needed.
• Keep learning – it is essential to keep learning and growing. This keeps you up-to-date on what is going on and also keeps you in a position where people will come to you for information.
• Integrity – this is vital to having a solid business. Do not try to “get away” with things just to make a few dollars. Always take the high road when dealing with clients and customers.
• Perseverance – all business owners go through slow times when the business isn’t doing as well as you would like or picking up as quickly as you had hoped. You will need to persevere through those times to get to the good times.
• Communication skills – you will need to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in written word. These are skills that can be honed and improved.
• Learn from mistakes – you cannot let mistakes that you make do you in. You need to be able to pick yourself, learn from the mistakes and go forward.

As an entrepreneur myself, these are the characteristics I have found essential to be an entrepreneur. These traits will make the difference between someone who wants to “try it to see if it works” and someone who becomes a successful entrepreneur.

Is it always easy? No, but it is highly rewarding. Remember that it does not have to be a “one-man show.” Get help from a coach or mentor along the way. This really helps keep motivation up.

Take inventory of your own strengths and compare them to the characteristics we have talked about here. Do you think you have what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur? If so, take the next step and get started in a home based business.
