Think layers. Much like an athlete dressing your baby in layers will allow you to quickly adjust for weather, temperature changes, AND diaper changes. 1. Undershirts that snap on the side are much easier to take on and off than the ones that go over a baby’s head. You will want several of these, such as a dozen because you will find yourself changing them and therefore needing to wash them often. This is an every season item. So whether your baby is born in the winter or summer you will need them. Softer than most of your baby’s other clothing they are also a nice barrier for delicate skin. 2. Onsies or bodysuits that snap at the crotch. In the summer they will have short arms and your baby will live in these. In the winter they will usually have long arms and you will add bottoms such as footed pants. Get about three or four. You may also receive many of these as gifts. There are these great gowns that are gathered at the feet, sometimes with a drawstring that you will want for your sleeping baby. This allows your baby to move their legs freely but still be covered up. The light cotton ones are great in the summer. There are also blanketed ones for colder weather since you will not be putting any blankets in the crib, bassinet, what have you, with your baby. Two to three per season is plenty. Light knit hats. Baby’s can lose a lot of heat through their tiny heads. Have about 3 on hand for wearing daily. 5. Socks. I love socks and I could have you overdo it. If your baby will be wearing a lot of footed outfits they are not that necessary. If your baby will be in gowns then you need several. 6.Bibs. Bibs become part of baby’s outfit. When my nephew was teething he lived in a bib. About six easy to wash bibs is great. 7. Blankets, also known as receiving blankets. You will wrap your baby in these a lot in the first few weeks of life. They can get messy too so you want several. Odd and Ends. In the winter have a snowsuit, knit hats, a couple of sweaters and warmer blankets. In the summer have sun hats and also a couple of sweaters. A nice dressy outfit for special occasions or church is a nice touch. Shoes come later or as gifts. Your darling baby will grow very fast. Spending a mint on two month old clothing will leave you sad when you see how much of the items still have the tags on it after they have outgrown the clothing. Shop wisely.
