For the average work-at-home-mom (WAHM), a quiet work space is a hard thing to find. There are usually interruptions galore and family needs that must be addressed. While it is all part of the joy of being able to stay at home, there are times when the WAHM must have some peace and quiet. Some of noise comes from the behavior of children and other family members, but some of it also comes from the environment that is created in the home office. Try some of the tips below to create quiet in your home. Timers What do timers have to do with peace and quiet in the home? Well, they are a great way to get everyone on the same page as to how long quiet is needed for. Children can understand the ticking of the timer as it slowly makes it way toward the zero. It lets you set clear expectations with them for what you need and how long it will take. Once they understand that 15 minutes is not going to take all day, they can better handle themselves during that quiet time. You may need to practice the concept with them, especially if your children are young, before you really need them to be quiet so that you can work. Toy Rotation If your children are anything like most, they have more toys than they know what to do with. Piles of toys sit idle on closet shelves and in boxes under beds. Instead of letting them go to waste, create a toy rotation box. Each week, pull out a special box that has "new" toys in it that can only be played with when you are working. This will keep your children entertained and allow you to give your work a focused 15-20 minutes. For added variety, consider swapping toy rotation boxes with another WAHM a few times a year. Your children will be delighted to have some unfamiliar toys and so will hers. Quiet Space Sometimes, all you need to do to create a quiet space in your home is to locate it in the best spot possible. This means taking your desk out of the family room and away from the television, and moving it to a quiet corner in a spare bedroom or other less frequented room in the house. Yes, you want to be able to keep an eye on your children while they are playing, but you also need to have the ability to go somewhere else in the home to focus while they are asleep or out of the house. Creating a quiet corner just for your work will go a long way to ensuring that your privacy and workspace are respected. Finally, remember that quiet homes are not all they are cracked up to be. Embrace your laughter-filled home and relish the sounds of your children playing with their toys and each other. Being a WAHM is a gift that allows you to be with your family even when they are being loud. There will be quiet when the kids are asleep, so try not to push too hard for it during the day.
