Decorating Baby’s Room with Wall Decals

By: Alyssa Davis

Why Wall Decals
Wall decals are similar to giant stickers that adhere to the wall surface. They can be easily removed and leave no residue on the wall itself. Repositioning wall decals is also possible and very easy to do. They simply peel off the wall, and can be re-hung at a different location in the room. For a room that cannot be painted or wallpapered, wall decals offer a great way to add visual interest to otherwise plain walls. Found in the wallpaper section of most large home improvement stores, as well as, online through specialty wallpaper distributors, wall decals come in a variety of shapes, styles and designs.

Coordinating with the Decor
One of the biggest challenges that a parent who cannot paint a baby's room has is selecting the perfect nursery theme. The best way to attack this issue is to look for ideas in decorating magazines, or at baby furniture and decor stores. Focus on themes that also have the room's wall color in them. For instance, if the nursery walls are beige, look for a theme that has a hint of beige to it. This creates more continuity in the room and not make the plain walls look so out of place. Once the theme has been selected, look to see if the manufacturer offers wall decals that coordinate with the design. Many decorating companies now offer wall decals to match the themes of baby bedding that they sell, because a lot of young couples start off in an apartment. The companies' willingness to capitalize on the parents' living situation, makes decorating an apartment or rental home nursery much easier. If there are no coordinating wall decals, the other option is to choose the wall decals first and find bedding that matches.

Wild Wall Decals
Wall decals once only came in traditional and not very nursery styles. They were aimed more for the country kitchen decorator than they were for the soon-to-be parent. Thankfully, today's wall decals come in a variety of sizes, shapes, styles and colors. From cars and trucks, to flowers and butterflies, to lollipops and bears, the pre-made wall decals of today can match just about any nursery decor. For a truly unique look, have the baby's name or a favorite saying custom cut from vinyl laminate. The vinyl adheres to the walls, can be repositioned as needed, and can be removed and reused again in another space. Wall decals can be hung high along the top of the wall as a ceiling border, at mid-height in a chair rail design, or scattered around the room for a whimsical approach. Experiment to find the best placement for the decals in the room.

Wall decals are the perfect decorating accessory for walls that cannot be painted. They add visual interest, tie together a theme, and make the baby's room more personal.
