Direct Sales - De-stressing During the Holidays

By: Audrey Okaneko

If you run a direct sales business, the winter months are the busiest time of the year. I'm sure given the opportunity; you could keep busy 7 days per week, 24 hours per day.

I'd like to share some tips to keep you de-stressed during this very busy time:

1. Take time for yourself each and every day. This is always my very first suggestion to women in business. Unfortunately it's also the suggestion I most often hear women respond to with "oh I don't have time." The problem with not taking time for yourself is the stress does build up and it's just not a good situation for your physical well being or your mental well being. Take a 10 minute walk. Sneak away and read one chapter in a good book. Call a friend and chat for 10 minutes about any topic that makes you happy. If you are a single mom and there is no one to watch your kids, take them to the library and use that time to read for yourself. Go during story time so that the kids are being read to.

2. Don't over commit. This is a time of year when as parents we are asked to bake, spend time in our children's classroom, attend adult parties, shop for gifts etc. As you consider what you have time take on and say yes to, remember, you run a business. If you don't service your customers, someone else will. Your customers need to be one of your top priorities. They will spend their money. You want that money spent on your business.

3. Take the time to decorate your own home. Often just seeing the decorations or lights can bring a smile to your face. Do you have a favorite decoration? Hang it up near your desk or work space. Sometimes just one minute looking at something that has special meaning to you can help de-stress you.

4. There are bound to be company specific stresses. Maybe a specific product is on back order. Or maybe a customer is being especially difficult. Find an upline member you can vent to. When you are able to share frustrations and get the words out of your body, this helps you to de-stress. Leaving the words unspoken leaves them in your body and brings stress to your body.

5. Shop from your own store as much as possible. Need teacher gifts? Buy from yourself. Need gift exchange items? Again, buy from yourself. Need gifts for friends and family members? Either shop from your own store or give a gift certificate from your own store. Don't add the stress of having to fight crowds and shop retail.

The winter holidays can be a very magical time of year. Take the time to plan your de-stress strategy and enjoy this wonderful time of year.
