Home | Direct Sales
I was reading posts in a direct sales forum today and for the hundredth time I read words about JOB’s being for those who want to live life “just over broke.” I have to tell you, this phrase pushes my buttons beyond belief. I find this phrase to be incredibly insulting toward anyone not involved in network marketing. Direct sales is not the right answer for everyone. Have you ever been to the grocery store? There are multiple brands and multiple sizes. This is because not one brand and size works for everyone. Have you ever bought a television set or a computer? There are many brands, many sizes and many different options available. Flat screens, plasma, the choices are just incredible. Just as one brand or one television style is not for everyone, network marketing is not for everyone either. A few times I’ve asked those who place these types of ads if they shop at grocery stores. If they say yes I ask why? Those who stock the shelves and ring up the purchases have traditional jobs. I once had an incredible friend. She had no interest in being a distributor but she used to spend hours with me, walking and keeping me company while I put out flyers and catalogs. Why would I insult her by belittling her choice to work an 8-5 job? If I were to insult her choice, the friendship would end. When a person who works an 8-5 job reads an ad that insults the 8-5 choice, they take it personally and move on to the next ad. Why would someone want to work with a person who had insulted their choice? I’ve also seen ads that claim the advertiser’s product is the only logical choice and to make a different choice is a waste of money. Again, this insults anyone who has made a different choice. This is not the way to gain customers. I think we’ve all seen the ads that claim we are poisoning our children if we don’t use a specific cleaning product brand. When I ask these ad placers if they take their children to doctors and hospitals, they say yes. The chemicals used to disinfect doctors’ offices and hospitals are stronger than most realize. These types of ads hurt you and hurt your business. You come across as hypocritical and your words are often taken personally, insulting the very person you had hoped to attract. Direct sales is a relationship business. Relationships come about when there is mutual respect. Insulting one’s choice in a job or a brand does not bring about mutual respect. Change your ads to be words of attraction and watch your business grow.
