Easy Steps to Print Poster Design

By: Colleen Davis

If you want to explore your talents in print poster design then go right ahead. It is not as daunting as you thought it would be. You just need to go through these steps and you are on your way to making your own custom posters.

The first thing you have to do is to have a plan. Just like in almost anything that you do, you must have a plan to start any project. Planning your poster print project is extremely important - this point cannot be overemphasized.

First, start by writing down everything you can think of for your poster. Prepare something like a mind map. Of course, the basic elements should be there such as the message, the graphics, the design, etc. But the most important thing when you plan your poster printing is your audience. Take my case for example. Before I start any customer posters project, as I am a visual person, I try to get a picture of the target audience. It may be a group of kids, a men in bar stools, women in power meetings, seniors in a bridge game. They help me visualize the target audience. It is important that I have them in mind so that I would be guided as I design or craft the message.

Second, try drawing your poster printing in a piece of paper. Although you do not have the skills to draw like myself, I try to draw what is on my mind to give a sense of understanding of where the elements should be. For instance, should the image be in the center of the poster or should it be in the right side? Should the text be in the upper portion or should it be in the side? These questions can be answered if you have a drawing. It is like putting your mind in a piece of paper. What is important is for you to have an idea of how the overall appearance would look like.

Third, clean up the clutter. Based on your drawing, try to clean up the clutter. Remember that you have less than 3 seconds to draw the attention of your audience to your poster printing. Clutter happens when you add irrelevant or unnecessary information to your poster, i.e. information that is nice to know to your audience but not essential, or information that your audience already knows, or picture that is not appropriate to your message, etc.

Fourth, as soon as you have all of these planned. You can now start working on your computer. There are various software programs available in the market that can help you with the design. These software programs come with templates that you can also use. Try to look for templates that are closest to what you have in mind and start working from there. If you are more skillful, you can start from scratch – with a blank page and work your way up. Imagination is key here. Never be afraid to experiment. Anyway, it is easier to correct a mistake in the computer rather than committing it while your posters are being printed.

In closing, there is no need to be afraid when embarking on your own custom posters printing. All you have to do is to prepare the necessary elements and you are on your way to designing your very own. It is not only cost effective as you will not spend so much money on hiring graphic designers, it is also a go.
