Effective Onsite Optimization

By: Mercedes Aspland

If you are looking to achieve high rankings in the search engines you are probably aware that linking strategies are important. However you must not ignore what is happening on your website as well and making sure they optimized is vitally important to ensure you get the best results from your offsite optimization.

Before you begin your onsite optimization you need to do a full analysis of your site to select your keywords. Once you have selected the keywords that are optimal for your website you will need to optimize your site taking the selected words into account. If you follow these steps you should be able to get the most out of your site:

1.Content Optimizing - The content on your site is a key factor for optimizing a web page. The content of your website can always use some updates and revisions. When you do so keep your keywords in mind and try to have them appear as approximately 5% of the content. However don’t cram them in if it does not read properly, you need to make sure your visitors want to read the content as well. Try and put at least one keyword on bold on each page as search engines see these words and more important.

2.Update your Page Title - Most search engines will read your page title to find out what your page is about and use the words in it to determine search terms for your site. If this is blank or generic it will not do your site any favours. Make sure your page title is accurate and contains your best keyword for that page.

3.Update Page Headers - These are the titles that appear on your page. Make sure you have relevant and keyword rich headers and the search engines put more weight on these words then they do the rest of the text on your site.

4.Navigational Structure - If is a good idea to add a site map to your website. Although most users will never go to this page you will find that most search engines will use it as a point of reference and to navigate your site. The site map will allow a search engine to easily find and index all of the pages in your website.

5.Relevant Menu Bar - When you have a menu bar make sure that you use keywords in the link text where appropriate. Search engines pay a lot of attention to the words used in links and see these as words you should be ranking for. If you make sure your keywords are included in these links where possible it will increase your chances of ranking higher.

6.Meta Tags - Although a lot of the major search engines do not use meta tags for ranking pages anymore some of the more minor ones do. Also your Meta description is often what is displayed in the search results by search engines so make sure it is relevant and if possible contains your keywords.

Following these above steps will not guarantee you high ranking on any search engine but good onsite optimization combined with an ethical linking strategy is a great place to start for that elusive front page listing.
