Eyeliner Application Tips

By: Mercedes Aspland

If you use eyeliner or eye pencil correctly you can completely change the look of your eyes and face. This is great for a night out or if you want to create the illusion of having a feature you do not. This article will give you some tips and advice on how to apply eyeliner to create the effect you are after.

The purpose of eyeliner is to frame and define the contour of your eyes in order to draw attention to them. Many experienced make-up artists, who know how to apply eyeliner, like to use eye shadow instead of eyeliner pencil to subtly line the eyes, creating a natural-looking effect.

Pencils used for lining eyes should be soft and smudgy, so they do not drag the skin around the eye during application.

Below is a list of looks you may want to create and how you can go about doing it:

More Round

Using this technique will make your eyes look more round then they actually are. This is a great technique to use if you have quite small eyes as it will help to open them up and make them look more seductive.

To get this look use the eyeliner to outline the contour of your eyes at the base of the eyelashes on both the top and bottom of the eye. Continue toward the outer corner of the making the line slightly thicker as you go.

More Oval

If you find your eyes are slightly too round and have a slight staring look then you can use this technique to make your eyes more oval. This will help to make them more seductive and appealing.

The best way to apply eyeliner to get this effect is to concentrate on the upper lid of your eyes. Start a fine line at the inner corner of your eye, thicken it in the middle, and draw it toward the outer corner of your eyes.

Close Together

If your eyes are slightly too far apart for your liking this technique will help with making your eyes appear as if they are closer together.

Use eyeliner to draw a tapered line starting thick on the inner corner of your eye and narrowing through to the outer corner of the eye.

Farther Apart

If you feel that your eyes are slightly too close together then using this technique will help to create the illusion that your eyes are farther apart then they actually are.

Apply eyeliner and start the line away from the inner corner of your eye thickening toward the outer edge and extend it slightly upward.

Larger

If you feel that your eyes are a bit too small for your face then you can use the following technique to make your eyes appear bigger and more open.

Trace a fine line of eye liner around the contour of your eye and also draw a fine line at the base of the upper and lower lashes for more definition.

The colours you choose to line your eyes with should be subtle and should complement your natural skin tone and hair colour. At times, you may want to use brighter colours for special occasions such as an evening event, however use these with care.

Below is a quick guide to the main eyeliner colours and the people it will suit:

Brown - Light Brown Hair, Medium Brown Hair, Dark Brown Hair, Red Hair

Black - Medium Brown Hair, Dark Brown Hair, Red Hair, Black Hair, Asian Eyes

Gray - Gray Hair, Cool Skin Tones

Other colours should mainly be kept for evening when you are trying to create a specific effect.
