Fabrics That Work for the Work at Home Mom

By: Alyssa Davis

Decorating a home office can be a lot fun and there are so many different choices when it comes to color and decor. You can create a whimsical home office or one that is all business. One of the most important things to consider when decorating the space, however, is that you will probably have children in the office at some point. Why is that important to remember? Well, when you are selecting fabrics, you want to make sure that they not only work for the room's decor, but that also work for you in keeping the room looking fresh and new.

Color Choices
The fabric that you select should not only be durable, but it should also match your office's decor. If the walls are light yellow and the fabrics you select are a bright red, you will not only get a headache from working in the space, but you may find you simply cannot stand to be in the room. Color effects our mood and motivation, so choose colors that excite you and make you happy. The bold, bright colors are best left for accent pieces throughout the room, while the neutrals will work best on the walls and floors.

Stain And Wrinkle Fighters
When you are choosing fabric for your curtains, throw pillows and upholstered chairs, make sure that they are stain and wrinkle resistant. The last thing you want to do is have fabrics that make your home office look messy and wrinkled. You will spend more time worrying about the curtains and the frumpy pillows than you will working on your projects. It is essential that the fabrics also be stain resistant, because the inevitable spills and stains will happen. No matter how many times you tell your child to wash his hands before he comes into your office, there will be a point when he comes running in with mud on his hands to show you his newest treasure. You can take it in stride and do not worry about your fabrics if you have chosen ones that can be easily cleaned. After all, your house is a home first and an office second.

Types of Fabrics
Oh, the sweet luxury of silk. Although it may be tempting to create a home office that is filled with luxurious fabrics like satin and silk, they are highly impractical for a working environment. You can use them as valances at the top of the window where no one can reach them, but your main fabrics should be strong and durable. Upholstery fabric is best and comes in a wide range of colors and patterns. Most large fabric stores sell it on rolls, so that you can get extra wide widths cut to the length you desire. If the fabric is not already treated with a stain resistant coating, consider purchasing a spray that you can use to keep the fabric free from dirt and grime. The more durable the fabric is, the longer it will last and the longer it will remain looking good.
