Finding a Freelance Writer

By: Judith L. Davis

Finding a freelance writer to write content for you can be a daunting task for some. The internet is full of aspiring writers. For every good writer there are many out there that are not so good.

The question would be how do you wade through all the writers out there and find the one that is right for you.

The first task would be to locate a writer. The ones with the glowing reputation are usually booked months in advance if they are taking on new clients at all. You may view taking a chance on a new writer as a gamble or a long shot, but it may be one that pays off. Don’t cross someone off your list simply because they are new.

Ask around. The best reference is still word of mouth. Ask your friends and associates who they use, or who they would recommend. People are often willing to share the names of the people they use, especially if they are pleased with their work.

Another great place to look is in your social networking connections. Use Twiter, Facebook, LinkedIn or others to say you are looking for a talented writer. You may have a writer on your list you didn’t even know about.

Once you have found a potential writer for your content needs, then you have to decide if they are the right fit for you. Take a look at their portfolio or sample pieces. Contact any references they have listed. You may want to ask them to write a short piece that is to your specification. Ask them for a fresh piece on a certain topic. Give them details about what you want, how long you want and a deadline.

Once they have completed the piece, look it over. Run it through copyscape. This will check to make sure that your writer is giving you 100% original work. Check for spelling and grammar. If you note something that you want changed ask the writer to change it. Then take a look again.

A good writer is an asset. Finding one that will write in the voice that you want and to the specification will be someone that you form a long working relationship with. They will be able to help you with article marketing, blog writing, newsletters, special reports and any other project that you need written words.
