Hosting a Direct Sales Fundraiser For a Church or Synagogue

By: Audrey Okaneko

Churches and synagogues are non-profit organizations and are always in need of funds.

It is through donations that clergy salaries are paid, the building is maintained and programs are offered to congregants.

Since these groups always need funds, churches and synagogues are wonderful organizations to approach about fundraisers.

Often there are sub groups within a church or synagogue. You値l find a brotherhood. You値l find a sisterhood. You値l find a board of directors. Often you値l also find school programs, possibly a preschool and/or a Sunday school. I would approach only one of the groups. Find the group leader and present your fundraising proposal to that person.

Often, I値l start with the school, since school fundraisers are more formatted than non-school fundraisers. Once you致e made contact within the school, you can use those new contacts to branch out to the rest of the organization.

Offer to do a presentation for the group. At this presentation, you can go over the order form, answer questions about the catalog and show off the products to the participants so that they値l be excited to offer them to their family and friends.

Since the church or synagogue will have a non-profit number, ask your company about sales tax. Often you can skip collecting sales tax by providing the non-profit tax ID number.

Offer to be on site with product displays on a certain day during the fundraiser so that folks can come see the products and ask you questions. I just set up a small display table where folks can pick up and touch the products they are selling.

Work with the organization to choose your wording carefully. Look at these two sentences:

1. We need money for the church

2. We are purchasing a new set of books for the school and our goal is to raise $____ or We are purchasing new chairs for the sanctuary and we致e been quoted a price of $______

Folks are much more likely to make a purchase when they know exactly where the money is going and what it will be used for. Buying new chairs will benefit everyone who worships there. It gives folks a reason to make the purchase.

Churches and synagogues offer wonderful fundraiser opportunities. Make sure you market your fundraiser to them.
