How Old is Old Enough – for a Child to Decorate their Own Room?

By: Alyssa Davis

Very Young Children

Just because your child is very young doesn't mean they wouldn't enjoy helping with some bedroom decorating projects. Even a very young child, with a little bit of help, can add some color and creativity to their room. One project that small children love to help with is a handprint painted wall. This is like a much larger version of finger painting, so of course kids get excited about helping. To do this, simply have the walls painted in a light neutral shade. Then, put down plenty of drop clothes and other types of protection over the parts of the room, such as the floor or carpet, which you don't want to get paint on. Using some brightly colored accent paints, put a bit of paint in the bottom of several disposable aluminum pie pans. Then, let your child place the palm of their hand in the paint, and press it against the wall. Use several different colors for a colorful effect. Even a very young child will get a real sense of accomplishment from making such a big decorating statement in their own room.

Older Children

If your child is a little older, you can involve them in a shopping trip to help decorate their room. This is not only a lot of fun, but can help teach your child budgeting and planning skills. Set a budget for the room decoration project, and then let your child do some research as to what types of things they would like to purchase to decorate their room. You will find that a child can really get excited about this type of project, and before long, will have notebooks full of plans and pictures cut out magazines. Let them know that they have to stick to the budget, but other than that, let them make some of the key decisions as to what gets purchased.

Foster Interest in Arts and Crafts

You can also use a bedroom decorating project as a great way to get your child interested in arts and crafts. Especially if they know they have a budget that they need to stick to, this can be a great incentive for them to start getting creative. What better way for a young child to learn how to sew then by letting them make a big stack of throw pillows for their own room? Or, depending on their age and abilities of course, let them build a shelf or two with scrap lumber, wood glue, some nails and some paint. They will not only get a sense of pride from making something themselves to help decorate their room, but they will be learning some good skills as well.
