If you are trying to get your website to the top of the search engines then it is important to know what the search engines think of your website and the information they have on it. This article will help you to find out what the search engines know. There are various different searches you can do on the search engines that will give you information about your website, as the search engines see it. We will mainly be looking at Google in this article however it is worth mentioning that Google does not always give very accurate data. Most of the searches we will look at can also be used in Yahoo where you will be able to get very accurate information about your website. 1. Your Keywords. You might want to know what keywords Google has for your website and it is very easy to find this out. Search in Google for keyword tool and the first result you get will be the Google Keyword tool where you will be able to get the information you need. On the Keyword tool search for your domain name and make sure you select the off website button. This will then return a list of keywords that Google has for your website. 2. You Links. In Google try to search for link:yourURL. This will return the links that Google has for your site. However this is where Google really falls down as they do not display all the information that they have. To find the links that are being picked up for your site we would recommend using Yahoo. By using the same search term you will get an accurate list of links. Yahoo will also allow you to view the total links to your site and to eliminate internal or external links to get a full profile. The is an extremely useful tool for any webmaster and should not be ignored. 3. You Pages. It can be very useful to know how many pages of your website the search engines can see. It is worth mentioning at this stage that the number of pages your website has can significantly affect your ranking and the more you have the better. However if you have pages that the search engines are not picking up you might want to look into this to make sure they all get indexed. To find your the pages that are being indexed by Google simply search for site:yourURL and you will get a list of all the pages indexed by Google. Again this same search term will work equally as well in Yahoo. 4. Your Cache If you want to see the last cache of your site by Google and when it was taken all you need to do is search for cache:yourURL. These tools are all free and can be easily found. However Google also offers webmaster tools for free. All you need to do is search for webmaster tools and the first result will again be the free Google tool. You can then set up an account or your website which you will need to verify by adding some code to your website. Here you will get some more accurate information on your website including keywords and links. You will also get information about how often Google visits your website and what it sees. The great thing about this tool is that if you have more than one website you can add them all to the same account and get detailed information on them all. Anyone serious about their SEO campaign needs to know what Google thinks about them and so should be utilising the free tools available.
