Some niches attract those who are only looking for freebies – whether it is free advice or information. These are niches to avoid, as the money will not be there.

Once you have chosen a niche and done your market research, you will need to decide how you will do business within that niche. You will want to decide if you are going to offer a product or a service. Also, you can either start a business from scratch or join a direct sales company and sell their products. Either is a good option, depending on what you are looking for. A direct sales opportunity will allow you to get up and running fairly quickly and there should be some training and guidelines in place to help you. On the other hand, starting a business from scratch allows you to run the business as you want to. You are the boss!

Let’s look at an example of how this works. After doing some brainstorming and research, you settle on the pet niche. You have pets yourself and have always been an animal lover, and after looking at the niche, you determine that people are willing to spend lots of money on their pets. So, what are your options for doing business within that niche?

You could start your own business from scratch, offering a service such as pet grooming, dog walking, pet sitting, etc. Or you could sell pet products such as dog sweaters that you make yourself. Or you could join an existing direct sales company and sell their products.

When considering how to start a home business, go through the above steps and see where you end up. A little research and brainstorming before you get into business can save you a lot of frustration down the road.
