How to Teach Your Children About God When You Don't Know Where to Start

By: Ruth Willms

As a Christian parent, you know that one of your biggest responsibilities - if not the biggest - is to teach your children to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

But what if you don't know how to teach your children to know God?

Maybe you haven't been a Christian for a very long time and you think you don't know enough yet. Perhaps you feel you don't have all the answers to the questions your kids might ask. Or maybe teaching kids just isn't your thing and you hope the kids will pick up everything they need to know in Sunday School, church and Bible club.

Taking your children to Sunday School classes or clubs where they will learn about Jesus is important, but you don't need to leave all the Bible teaching to them. You are a powerful influence in your children's lives and your life can be the best example they'll ever get of what a Christian life can look like.

You also know your own children better than anyone else does. You have a front row seat to identifying those teachable moments when biblical truths can be practically applied to their daily lives.

If you still feel uncomfortable teaching your kids about God, here are some things you can do to prepare:

1. Pray. Spending time praying about your children and with your children can create opportunities you didn't expect, and also prepare you to be their teacher.

2. Read the Bible regularly, on your own and with your children. If you haven't read it through all the way before, read through the Bible as a family. Take your time. To communicate with your children on their levels, consider using a children's Bible that makes the Scriptures easier to understand. Some Bibles even include talking points you can use for discussion.

3. Ask for help. If you have unanswered questions of your own, look for people you can trust to answer them for you. Your pastor, a mentor, Christian newsletters and magazines can all be good resources.

4. Plan family activities that create opportunities to talk about the Bible. Look for object lessons, field trips, and fun activities you can do together that help you explore. Your child's Sunday School teacher or club leader probably has some ideas you could use.

5. Relax. Remember that you don't have to know all the answers. When you don't know the answer to a question, use that as an opportunity to discover the answer together.
