I'm Just Wondering... Are You For Real?

By: Denise Willms

Have you ever considered making money on the Internet by pretending you're somebody else?

I just read a report that was basically an explicit how-to for creating a fake but realistic blog identity (photo included) and writing believable testimonials for products you’ve never used.

For an honest Internet business owner, it was an eye-opening read, and a little scary too.

It also reaffirmed for me the importance of writing and submitting articles.

One of the best things your online articles can do is help your target market get to know you.

As someone considering buying your product, I want to know who you are. Can I trust you? Are you honest? And now I'm really wondering, are you for real?

Your articles can either obscure your "humanness" or let your personality shine. Here are a few ways to let your readers know you’re a human being too.

1. Write your opinions

You're the expert. Tell your readers what you think. Even if they occasionally disagree with you, at least they'll know you exist.

But be careful. Only give your opinions on your area of expertise. Stay focused on your topic. Don't editorialize about things irrelevant to your online business.

Back up your opinions with facts and tell your readers what your insights mean for them. After all, helping your readers should always be the main point of your articles.

2. Write how you talk

Want to hide behind your words? It's easy. Just write the facts ma'am and don't let any of YOU show through. But that makes for a boring article and in the end your readers will wonder why they didn't read the encyclopedia entry instead.

Some of the most successful writers, on the web and off, write just the way they talk. Readers love to hear an author’s unique voice come through their written words. It makes the article interesting and readers think they’re getting to know the genuine you.

3. Write about your own experiences

Include real-life examples that show readers what you mean and why it matters.

Here’s another word of caution... What you put on the Internet is there forever. Don't share irrelevant personal details and always be gracious to others in your articles.

Even when you're writing about your own experiences, remember your articles are all about your readers and never about you. If it's not going to help your readers achieve their goals, it shouldn't be included.

And on that note, here’s a real-life experience that might help show why the words you write are so potent.

Someone once told me that writing is the closest thing there is to true telepathy. It works like this:

You, the writer, have an idea you want to tell other people about. You put your thoughts into writing. When others read what you wrote, they’ll read the exact words you were thinking. It’s just like they’re reading your mind.

OK, even if it’s not truly telepathy, your writing still has amazing potential to build a positive relationship between you and your reader.

So take some time to show yourself and your glowing personality in your articles. The rewards are long lasting and your Internet business will thank you.
