Ideas For Decorating Girls Rooms

By: Marisa Miller

I spend a lot of time daydreaming about home decor, and love searching for ideas and inspiration in the furnishing and decorating of my little girl’s room. It’s tough to find good resources for girls rooms that aren’t overly themed and contrived. Anyone can walk into a big box store and walk out with a (low thread count, polyester blend) bed in a bag and matching wallpaper border. But it’s a good idea to take a little more time to pull everything together - the fun is in the hunt! First step is stay out of the kid’s aisle; you can use furnishings and fabrics that aren’t necessarily ‘for kids rooms’. Add a generous touch of your child’s personality through accents and accessories. The result will stand the test of time, even when your daughter has new interests, heroes, or favorite colors! A beautiful childhood bedroom will be remembered fondly when she is grown.

Decorating a girls room does not have to be difficult - just choose simplicity and comfort over fussiness. These are the only loosely based “themes” you will find here. These decor ideas are based on muted tones and simple elegance for any stage of a girl’s life. If you’re looking for an alternative to neon hued daisies or cartoon characters, you might consider the following styles:

Shabby Chic - a broad term that includes vintage flea market items with painted finishes, antiqued appearances, lots of whites and pastels, and generally a cottage decor. This style is also referred to as Paris Apartment, Shabby French, Romantic style.

Victorian - another catch all term that has influences from the late 19th - early 20th century. the more traditional approach with rich woods, classic fixtures in brass, and a nostalgic appeal. Small floral prints on cream backgrounds and needlework pillows look lovely.

Boho style - a blend of ethnic paisleys and florals, rich earth tones, sumptuous fabrics, textures and natural materials. Visit the import store for fabrics like Indian saris, sheer curtain panels, matchstick blinds and cushions.

Natural - a neutral palette with a mind towards sustainability. Natural materials, unbleached linens and cottons, eco-friendly paints, and furnishings made of renewable sources.

Country - French, Scandinavian, Primitive, Country Modern…easy living and comfortable no matter which way you approach it.

Prioritize your spending budget by learning about which items you should splurge on and where to save. Definitely buy the best sheets and bedding you can afford - these can last forever and she’ll be spending a lot of time using them. Go for high thread counts - 250 is a good minimum - and natural fibers (no one should have to sleep on polyester sheets!)

Some extra thoughts for french country - it’s one of the most popular decorating styles in the grown up areas of the house and can be beautiful for kids too. The color palette comes straight from the colors of the countryside: olive greens, lavender crops swaying in a gentle breeze. A more agreeable pair of colors is hard to find . These tones can be stretched out towards either end of the swatches. Things don’t have to match exactly! Throw in some teal for punch! Ikea has a cute iron black bed that would look nice here. You could also add French furniture; characterized by carved wood detail, fine craftsmanship, feminine lines…wouldn’t a little French settee look wonderful in a girl’s room? A few cherished dolls seated on the cushion. Another must have is an armoire. Beyond the usual toile, you can also mix in ticking, folkloric paisleys, and ginghams.

If you lean towards Victorian decor, it is a truly tasteful and elegant style. This one really appeals to me because it reminds me of visiting my cousin when I was little. Her room nearly made me gasp every time I entered it - impeccable white linens and lace, dainty child sized china cabinet for all her tea accessories, dark wood furniture, old fashioned dolls and teddy bears on display. It was the room I wished I could have had.The modern interpretation of Victoriana is easy on the eyes, no more dark dreary colors; but faded traditional prints, lots of creamy white, and a touch of a choice pastel here and there. It’s a bit more sophisticated than shabby chic, and furniture is usually a medium to deep stain instead of painted. Any proper Victorian girls room must have a dressing table. This can be an actual vanity table with attached mirror or you can create one with a small desk or secretary. Consider an old fashioned mirror and brush set to lay on a mirrored tray. Maybe some cakes of soap on a cake pedestal or lotion in old fashioned packaging. Local import stores may carry soaps from France with beautiful labels.

Whether you just enjoy reading about decorating ideas, or you have a little girl in your life that needs a beautiful space of her own - I hope you find these ideas on girls room decor useful!
