By: Debbie Proctor

Whether you have a full time home-based business or a part-time home based business, the key to success is to stay focused. It can be very easy to get distracted when you are working at home. If you have children and a family, it can be rewarding to work at home only if you can find a way to balance work, life, and business life.

While some people have a tendency to slack off in their home based business, others are just the opposite and find themselves working all the time. Many people become overwhelmed and crash, simply because they lack focus. Whether you just started your business or have been working at it and becoming frustrated, here are 5 easy tips on how to stay focused.

1) One Bite At A Time

Old riddle - how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Looking at a large project can be daunting and cause you not only to miss a deadline, but to actually get nothing accomplished.By breaking down the project into bits, you can focus on it much easier and get it done without causing yourself stress.

2) Make A Daily List Of Things To Do

Keep a list or a journal each day with your projects that you plan to complete no matter how small. You can check them off the list once you have completed each project. Without a list, you are apt to miss a deadline or a project.Making a list will give you a sense of order in your home based business and will make it easier to remember dates.

3) Make A Schedule

One of the nicest aspects about working at home is that you can have a flexible schedule. However, a schedule that is too flexible can cause you to run around like a chicken without a head half of the time, or spend all of your time working.Develop a work schedule and stick to it. Sure, you can be flexible if things come up, that is a part of the allure of working at home. However, you should have some sort of schedule for working.

4) Set Short Term And Long Term Goals

Think about where you want your business to be in five years. Think about where you want to be in five years time. Those are your long-term goals. Then develop short term goals for your business that will enable you to achieve the long-term goals.Short-term goals help keep you focused and give you a sense of accomplishment each time one is completed.

5) Learn To Say "NO"

Sure, you want to work, but if you bite off more than you can chew, chances are that you are going to end up not getting anything done, because you are so stressed out. Then you might lose clients. Do not over-extend yourself and just learn to say "no."

One other thing- do not procrastinate! Start using these tips right now to successfully start your business with your mind focused.
