In the Entryway The entryway to the home often becomes the hot spot for discarding shoes, backpacks, umbrellas, outerwear, and more. A few simple pieces of storage furniture in the foyer or entryway can go a long way toward putting an end to the mess. Start with a simple storage bench that not only provides a place to remove your boots after playing in the snow, but also doubles as a place to store shoes. A coat rack placed by the door offers incentive for everyone to put their coats and backpacks up off the floor. A shelf that holds baskets can be used for mittens, hats, books, and the other hodgepodge of items that your family leaves in this all-too visible section of the home. In the Living Area or Family Room The living room is the favored gathering spot for most families, but things like books, remote controls, and other items can make this room look unkempt. A fabric or leather covered ottoman that features storage inside makes a good foot prop for watching the big game while keeping things tidy and out of the way. Clever cubes that appear to be a side table but actually conceal a hollow center for storing supplies, toys, and more are great choices for this area of the home – as are storage coffee tables that have drawers for magazines and games. Don't overlook storage basics for the living room or family room, like storage towers for DVDs and CDs. In the Bedroom Under the bed storage in the bedroom provide the perfect spot for your off-season sweaters, coats, and shoes. A bedside table with a drawer can store a variety of things that would ordinarily clutter the top of a nightstand. Place a storage trunk at the end of your bed to hide quilts and linens. In kids' bedrooms, go for toys chests to keep everything out of sight, and handy cube storage for items like books and games. If you have a guest bedroom, you can use the bedroom's dresser and chest for storing linens and off-season clothing as well. In the Kitchen If the kitchen is cluttered, preparing food is even more of a chore for busy moms. The cabinets in your kitchen will provide the bulk of your storage space, but you can also add smaller cupboards in an unused spot of the kitchen – and deep cabinets over top of the refrigerator and stove are great for storing away cookware or small appliances that are seldom used. You might also consider a small book shelf for displaying and organizing your cookbook collection, and a wine rack for keeping bottles of wine out of the way.
