Marriage Problems Are Not the Problem

By: Paul Friedman

It is very interesting how people think if they solve their marriage problems everything will be OK. You see, marriage problems aren't the problem with problem marriages. Marriage problems are the stink that comes from those things that don't belong in your marriage. Solving a marriage problem is like spraying perfume on someone who hasn't had a bath for six months. If you want to get rid of your marriage problems stop making new ones and the old ones will disappear on their own. Does this make sense to you?

Let's say for instance you and your spouse learned from some flaky pseudo psychologist to share with each other what bothers you about each other. Unfortunately this insane practice is actually encouraged to this day. Wouldn't it be easier for each of you to just pick up a two by four and start bashing each other? It has exactly the same affect. The only difference is using the two by four clearly shows what that kind of behavior does to your partner. Who, in their right mind, can imagine what good might come from beating up the person you love.

The simplest way to eliminate marriage problems is to not cause them. The easiest way to not cause marriage problems is by filling your communications and thoughts with beautiful and loving acts. I have yet to meet somebody who prefers a two by four upside their head over a flower or a sweet, "I love you."
