In today’s modern society, many families choose to celebrate their children’s birthdays with one large celebration, especially if the children have birthdays close together. Larger, joint birthday parties are often less expensive than having two separate parties and are also easier on both the family giving the party and the guests coming to the party and their families, especially if the birthday children have the same general group of friends that would come to both parties. Mixed gender or age birthday party ideas are easy even for work-at-home-moms, also known as WAHMs. Themes for Different Genders It may be that the children celebrating their birthdays are younger children that are close in age and they may or may not be the same gender. Finding a theme suitable for both children can often feel like a daunting task, however it can be a simple process if you involve the children who are having the birthdays. Many times the children who are celebrating birthdays together offer many good ideas that are both useful and easy to incorporate into one combined birthday party theme, regardless of the children’s ages or genders. Children often enjoy aiding their parents in planning their own birthday celebration, including the theme, cake, games, and guest list. Often times, children are overlooked when help is needed in planning due to their young age and lack of experience. Many boys often choose themes based on emergency, construction, or everyday vehicles. Girls on the other hand typically choose themes centered on fairies, animals, or princesses. Combining the two genders can often prove to be a difficult task. One of the easiest ways to have a gender neutral birthday theme is to focus on animals, such as horses. Occasionally children of different genders will have common interests such as camouflage items, sports, or television characters. Combining Parties for Different Aged Children Parents who choose to combine birthday parties for children of different ages need to take into consideration how far apart the children are in age. If the children are too far apart, such as a teenager and a toddler, it can be a very difficult process to create a party for both children. When combining a birthday party for two very different ages, often times one or the other child will have to sacrifice for the other child; most often the older child feels awkward at a party for their toddler aged sibling. If your children are more than 5 years apart in age, you may want to consider two separate parties on different days. Children who are 5 years or closer in age often have the same interests and many of their friends may also be siblings, if not the same child. Often children who are this close in age are enthusiastic over a joint celebration and view it as a chance to have twice as much fun. Younger children are more likely to enjoy and be willing to share their birthday party with a sibling than older children as long as there is something for each of them to enjoy individually with their own personal friends.
