New Years Resolutions

By: Laurie Neumann

It is almost that time of year again, when we all begin making New Years resolutions. We think about what we would like to change about ourselves or our situations. We make plans to institute changes, with good intent to follow through on those plans.

Then February rolls around, and we sometimes allow ourselves to get back into old habits. Pretty soon, it’s the end of another year, and nothing has really changed. We become frustrated and once again, resolve to make things better somehow the next year.

Sound familiar? This is an all too common scenario that we have probably all been a part of at one time or another in our lives. But this doesn’t have to go on. We can change things and make them better. Let’s make 2009 the year we do it!

For many of you, starting a home based business has been a dream, a goal or a desire for many years. But the steps haven’t been taken to actually get one started. Suddenly, another year goes by and you find yourself in the same financial situation as always – lacking.

What Are Some of The Reasons You Might Be Procrastinating?

• Afraid of failure – you may be afraid that you won’t know how to run a business, or that it won’t be successful. You want a guarantee of success before you start. There are many ways to check profit potential of a business before you get started, but I’m afraid there are no guarantees.
• You feel you don’t have the time, startup costs or know-how to get a business going.
• Waiting for the “right time” – you may be waiting until your kids are older, or until the economy is better or a whole list of other things. But the truth is, the best time to start is NOW. Think of where you can be a year from now or five years from now if you start your business sooner rather than later.
• You may be a “perfectionist.” You want to do everything the right way and make no mistakes. But I have to tell you that you will make mistakes, but that’s not a bad thing, as long as you learn from them. You may have to do things by trial and error for a while, but that’s ok.
• You may look at starting a business as a “whole.” That will make it seem overwhelming, hard and a bit scary. Take one step at a time, learn from others who have done it, and it will be very doable.

Whatever your reason may be, if you don’t get started, you will never change your employment situation. Don’t let this year be the same as all the rest. Make some changes that you will benefit from in the years to come.

Start with a plan. A step-by-step way to reach your goal. Then implement each step. Pretty soon, you'll find you have reached your goal!
