Unfortunately, sometimes actions and intentions are not aligned, and you simply find yourself stressed and mired in clutter. To fix this problem, pick a room in your home where this problem is prevalent, and start there. For example, the family room is where everyone converges, and it is where you spend a good deal of time. Your family room probably started off with a decent floor plan, but over the years as you have acquired new pieces of furniture, you have not discarded older pieces of furniture. Sometimes it can be hard to get rid of a favorite old piece of furniture that has outlived its usefulness, so you simply move it to the outskirts of the room. Then you find yourself rearranging furniture to cram yet another new piece into the room. At some point as you are tripping over tables and chairs, you will have to make the decision to get rid of something. Do it happily, because when you are done thinning out the furniture in your family room, your mood will be lighter and brighter. Draw an outline of your room, and without considering what furniture you already have, make a layout of how you would like your family room to look. Then add only furniture that is on your room layout back into the room, and donate the rest to charity. Your room will feel fresh, and you will be able to breathe again. You may even have a space or two to fill. Even after you have thinned out your furniture, you need to make sure that you do not cover the surfaces with clutter, because this will defeat the whole purpose of culling out unneeded furniture. One of the main clutter culprits is printed material like newspapers and magazines. If you find that you end up with a stack of newspapers that you are planning to read, and an even bigger stack of magazines that you keep just in case you want to look something up in them, you need to take a minute for a reality check. If you did not have time to read the newspaper on the day it was printed, do not worry. Simply read what you can each day and start fresh the next day. So every evening go through your family room and put your newspapers in the recycle pile in your garage. Then once a week, drop off your papers for recycling. Now turn your attention to your magazines. Display them on your coffee table, and when a new issue arrives remove the old issue for recycling. You are not going to look up an article that you read a year ago. If you are looking for information, you will very likely turn to the Internet, because it is much easier to find exactly what you are looking for in an instant. You may even find your magazine article online! By keeping the main portion of your home organized and clutter free, you will enjoy living in a space that lets you function creatively and efficiently.
