However, there are a couple of things that you can do to get your photographs organized and keep them that way. Whether you photo problems are electronic or actual photos, they are both arms of the same problem, which is simply organization. Take a minute to think about why you took the picture in the first place. Was it to remember a day, to chronicle an event, or for insurance records? Typically if you are taking photos for a specific purpose, there is some sense of urgency to getting them delivered either physically or electronically. So these photos are typically not causing a problem. For example, if you are taking photos of damage to your car for an insurance claim, you will get he photos emailed, or developed and sent to the insurance company quickly, because your settlement check hinges on it. Where people seem to get into trouble with their photos, is when they do not have a purpose for the pictures that they are taking. So it seems simple enough that you can solve your photo organization problem by always having a purpose for your pictures. Having a purpose is a very simple process, and you can begin by organizing your envelopes of photos from you 35mm camera that you have been stuffing away for decades. At your office supply store buy several photo storage boxes. The number of boxes that you will need depends entirely on how many photos you have to organize, but think in terms of one box per decade or per a five year span of time, or organize by subject like pets or vacations. Then label and line up the boxes on a table, and begin going through your photos. Do not save the negatives, simply grab the photos out of the envelope and place them in the appropriate box. They do not have to be in order, because you can do that later. You should be able to box hundreds of photos in an hour or two, and while it is tempting to look through them all, save that for later as well. Now that you have taken your messy footlocker full of photos and neatly filed them in a few photo storage boxes, your photos are organized. Next go through your electronic photos and pull only the exceptional ones into a folder to have printed. Then add these to your photo boxes. You have several choices of where to store your electronic photos including on your computer, on a photo site like snapfish or shutterfly, on a thumb drive, on a CD or on a backup site. While it is cheap and easy to keep thousands of electronic photos, you can organize them by month, year or topic for easy retrieval, and only print the best of the best images. This way you will be able to find and enjoy your memories whether you simply want to reminisce, or perhaps when you finally have time to assemble that scrapbook that you have been pondering for the last decade!
