Picking the Perfect Work Chair

By: Jessica Ackerman

When it comes to decorating your home office, there are a lot of different things that need to be considered. The most important thing is where your office is located. If you work from your kitchen table after everyone is done for the day, your choice of office furniture is going to be much more limited than if you have a separate room designated for your business. No matter where you work, it is, however, important to have a comfortable chair to work from. Picking the perfect work chair can make a huge difference in how productive you are while working.

Style Options
There are many different styles of office chairs. Some are the traditional high-backed, wheeled desk chairs that you would find in a typical office. Others are upholstered pieces that could easily fit in with the style of other rooms in the house if need be. The most important thing to consider when selecting the perfect chair is how comfortable it will be for you while you are working. If your work surface is a high counter, a traditional office chair is certainly not going to be the best option. At the same time, if you spend hours a day typing at your desk, a hard stool or chair will leave you with an aching back. Choose the chair style that will work best for you and provide you with the most support for the way you work.

Fabric Options
Just as there is a wide selection of chair styles, there are also many different fabric options. You can choose from traditional upholstered fabrics, leather, or even plain, unfinished wooden chairs. The fabric should coordinate with the rest of your room’s decor. Even if the style of chair is slightly out of place for its spot in the kitchen, it should still match something in the kitchen space. If you work in an open space and will have little ones touching the fabric of your chair, you may want to invest in something that is stain resistant or can easily be cleaned up and wiped off. That white linen chair may look beautiful, but after your toddler rubs her chocolaty hands along the side, it will be anything but.

Support
Comfort and support are key to a successful chair purchase. When you are searching for the perfect piece, be sure to test it out thoroughly. Sit forward in it, slide all the way back, and move around as you normally would during a typical work period. The chair should provide you with the leg, bottom and back support that you need to maintain a healthy posture.

Choosing a chair style that works for you both in function and form can be challenging. It is important to shop around, try out different chairs, and be willing to spend a little extra on yourself if the perfect chair warrants it. When you are comfortable and your body is free from aches and pains, you are much more likely to be productive and successful in your work.
