Simple Luxuries for the Home Office

By: Jessica Ackerman

When you work from home, your office space can be anything but calming. Children underfoot, pets climbing on your desk, and stray papers and school projects can undermine your most valiant efforts to stay organized. You may begin to feel that your life as a work-at-home-mom (WAHM) is more work than you ever bargained for. One way to take the stress out of your day and appreciate the opportunity to work at home is to indulge in some simple luxuries for your home office.

Stop and Smell the Roses
Literally, take a break each day and smell the roses. Whether your home office is a two foot area on the kitchen counter after the children go to bed, or a full-blown room to itself, there is always room for at least a single rose in that space. By taking the time to indulge your senses of sight and smell in a flower that is luxury in floral form, you are recognizing the fact that you are worth the effort. A rose, whether it is a solitary one in a thin glass vase, or a fresh cut bunch from your garden, is a great way to indulge yourself without spending a lot of money.

Coffee Mug
Many WAHMs keep their coffee or tea mugs close at hand when working. Even if it is late at night, the need for a little jolt of caffeine prevails. Instead of just using any old mug, select a mug for yourself that is the perfect size, color and weight. You will find that you look forward to that mug, that simple luxury of a sip of coffee or tea, everyday. It is the reminder that even though you cater to your family for the majority of the day, you can still indulge yourself.

Rug
Underneath your work area, spread a comfortable, warm rug. The rug should block the draft from a cold concrete floor and make you want to sink your toes into its richness. The rug does not have to be big, nor does it have to be expensive, but it should match your office's decor. When you are stressing over a project that is due or a paper that needs to be written, being able to rest your feet on a soft, luxurious rug will make a difference in your outlook.

Colors
What colors make you truly happy? Is it a bright yellow that clashes with your other decor, but makes you smile? Or is it a soft baby blue that reminds you of your newborn son's beautiful eyes? No matter what color is your favorite, add it into your home office decor. A bright yellow paperweight or a picture of a tiny bird's nest with a robin's egg inside can be the perfect little luxuries. The burst of color will help keep your spirits lifted and your work on track.

It truly is the simple luxuries like flowers, coffee mugs and rugs underneath the desk that make a WAHM feel so much better about her job. Fancy furniture or expensive drapes aren’t necessary, but there does need to be a sense that mom's job and mom's comfort are just as important as everyone else's.
