Take Control of Your Shoes With These 6 Surefire Tips

By: Marilyn Bohn

The Wizard of Oz has become a classic and is often included on the Top 10 movies ever made. I love the song from the movie, “Over the Rainbow” and I love Judy Garland’s voice and her sparkly red shoes.

The plot is about Dorothy a 12 year old girl who longs for a place where there isn’t any trouble. She is knocked unconscious during a tornado and she starts to dream. She dreams that she is in the Land of Oz and she wants to go home. In her dream she is advised by Glinda, a good witch to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City where the Wizard of Oz can return her to her home.

While she is trying to get to the Emerald City she is trying to avoid a Wicked Witch. This witch is trying to get Dorothy’s ruby red shoes, who received them from Glinda. Eventually she clicks her heals three times and does get back home.

Judy Garland wore 6 different ruby red shoes during the filming and one pair is on display at the Modern History Museum in Washington D.C. I get a little thrill every time I see them. I always pictured them bright red and was surprised when I saw they are a red wine color. They are all sparkly with beautiful shinny sequins. These are the most famous shoes I have ever seen.

As a professional organizer women say to me “I wish I loved to organize clutter”. Just like Dorothy who longed for a place where there isn’t any trouble we can have homes where there isn’t clutter.

Let’s take a journey of our own along the yellow brick road. Dorothy had beautiful ruby red shoes and I bet you have some pretty shoes that create clutter in your home and closet because they don’t have a home or a space for them to be organized.

Shoes are an investment we have made in time (trying them on and looking for just the right pair to go with an outfit or that feel good on our feet) and in money. Let’s organize the clutter in our closets by considering these options:

1. In the bottom of your closet if you have floor space a wooden, moveable rack is a great organizer. IKEA has a two shelf rack that is ideal.

2. Hang a multi-pocket shoe organizer over the back of a closet door. They come with clear plastic pockets or cloth pockets. The shoes peek up over the tops of the pockets so either is a good choice.

3. If you have room on your closet rod use a vertical shoe organizer. It hooks over the rod. They come in two sizes. The narrower ones hold one pair of shoes per “slot”. The wider ones can hold two shoes in each “slot” or accommodate larger shoes. This type of organizer can also hold accessories or shirts, shorts, underwear or pants instead of placing them in a drawer. This type of organizer is more versatile but can only be used if you have enough closet space to hang it, it doesn’t work on the back of a door.

4. When you absolutely have no closet space a rolling under-the-bed organizer could be used. I don’t recommend this as it is cumbersome to get to and the more inconvenient something is to use the more likely it won’t be used and shoes won’t be put away but will be left scattered on the floor.

5. Stacking racks sit on the floor and some hold up to 30 pairs of shoes. Shoes are easy to reach and to put back on the rack.

6. If you don’t want to use some kind of container line up shoes on the floor of the closet according to type such as business, casual, sports, sandals and so forth.

Organizing shoe clutter is almost as easy as it was for Dorothy who clicked the heels of her ruby red shoes to make her wish come true. If your wish is to organize clutter in your closet as a professional organizer I recommend starting with the floor first where your shoes rest at the end of the day.
