The Benefits of Networking for Your Online Business

By: Ivette Muller

Working from home is almost everyone’s dream.

The ability to work from home is certainly a blessing. You get to work in your PJ’s if you want, you don’t have to put on makeup and you can take care of your kids while earning money.

All these things are wonderful benefits of working from home and having an online business certainly is appealing. But depending on what your online business is, it actually helps if you don’t hide behind the computer.

Here are some of the benefits for getting out of the house and attending live events to build your online business:

1. Meet and mingle with your target audience: Rubbing shoulders and getting face to face with your target audience is like gold. You’ll get to hear firsthand what their needs are, the challenges their facing and the solutions they are looking for. You can get all your market research done at one event!

2. Build relationships: One of the challenges of working from home is the isolation. While you may be home with your kids, sometimes you miss the adult interaction. By attending networking events, you get to build relationships with other adults and business people.

3. Build trust: When attending networking events, your primary goal should be to meet people and genuinely build relationships. Truly take the time to get to know your new friends, find out their interests and their challenges. Even if you aren’t the person that can help them directly, maybe you can help them find what they need. By genuinely helping people you earn their trust. People like to do business with other people they know, like and trust.

4. Learn new things: A great thing about networking events is all the different people you’ll get to meet. The knowledge and resources you all can share is priceless. By attending networking events, you’ll be introduced to new businesses and professionals you wouldn’t typically meet online.

5. Enhance your credibility: Regularly attending networking events, building relationships and helping others is a great way to showcase your skills, expertise and ethics. By building your credibility you will accomplish at least two things: one, you will become the “go to” person for your business, when someone needs your type of service, they will contact you; and second, you will have the opportunity to meet other influential business people. Never turn down the opportunity to “do lunch” with potential mentors, joint venture partners and future clients.

Networking and attending live events doesn’t have to be scary or intimidating. As long as you go with the right mindset, you will have a great time and meet some wonderful people. Your main goal for attending any networking event is to meet people and build relationships. It’s better to meet 2 or 3 people and start building a relationship with them, than it is to pass out your business card to 50 people and hope for a phone call.
