This book by Mary-Elaine Jacobsen is an interesting and practical guide for parents. I found it very useful being a parent of toddlers in their " terrible " stage. Outburst and tantrums a common site in my household as my kids have yet learn how to express themselves properly. Mary mentions the need for the parent to remain cool whenever bad behavior is exhibited by the child. When one is cool there will be little chance for their child to manipulate them into giving in to their demands and wants no matter how unreasonable they are. She advocates that parents operate on the basic principle of democracy. With democracy the child's opinions are taken into consideration and each family members personal worth, value and dignity are weighed. The child knows that they are loved and that their parents expect them to follow certain rules and do their fair share. He also knows that his parents do have the right to veto their decisions if it affects the child's and well being of the family. Parents should encourage their children to become independent and take responsibility for their actions. Any disciplinary actions met out to the child is in bid o guide and teach and not to punish or control the child. In this process the child is able to learn to be self-reliant and solve their own problems. I find that these are essential life skills which should be cultivated so that when a child enters the world he will be adequately equipped with the right skills to cope with both successes and failure. There are many case studies and practical examples in the book to deal with certain errant behaviour. I have implemented some of the behaviour changing techniques that Mary had mentioned on my elder son and it had worked. I do recommend that you grab this book for a read if you are facing Brats at home.
