Tips fo Decorating the Nursery for Your New Baby

By: O Quinn

It’s so true that one of the most enjoyable rooms to decorate in your home will be for your new bundle of joy.

Whether by birth or by airplane (adoption) setting up that ooh so sweet room is a way to burn off some of that extreme excitement about our new arrival.

So do it right and outline what you will need to do before the big arrival date.

Unless you are truly cramped for space and see no way around keeping the baby in your room (bassinet) or some other set up. Get your big ticket items for the nursery out of the way before baby comes. You don’t want to have to go shopping for big money items after baby comes if you can help it.

If people offer to give you their hand me downs do your homework as far as recalls and unsafe specifics. Older cribs can have slats that are too far apart and changing tables...well you know what happens there. Check the Consumer Product and Safety Commission website for constant updates.

Get a list of must have as far as furniture you need. Big on my list are crib, changing table, and rocker. I’ve done with and without and these are the top of my list. Next comes bookshelf and dresser. Believe it or not I need a bookshelf before I need a dresser. You would be amazed at all the books that come flooding your way for a new baby. From shower gifts to hand outs at the library a bookshelf is a must for any child.

Recent research shows that baby sleeps better with a fan in the room. I was in on this early and have always used a fan in my baby’s and now big kid’s room. I sleep with one myself so I know the calming feature first hand. (Keep it out of reach).

Are you painting the nursery? Do this well before baby’s due date and pregnant mama let daddy or a friend do the painting. Steer clear of the fumes even though you can buy low fume paint.

Things to keep in mind when decorating.

Safety such as blind and curtain cords wrapped up and out of baby’s reach.

Don’t place the crib near the window.

Outlet safety plug.

Ease for you.

Gloss paint on the walls to make them easier to wash.

A night light for the many late night trips.

Curtains to keep out the daylight for when baby is taking a nap or even if they have a habit of getting up before you do.
