Transcriptionist needed - Start your own Home Business?

By: Nicole Dean

If you're looking for a business to start from home quickly and easily then working as a general transcriptionist could be just what you're looking for. A transcriptionist is someone who who types verbatim (word-for-word) from an audio recording. This online business idea won't require much in terms of office space, equipment, or start up costs and could be perfect for someone that has accurate, fast, typing skills.

If you google the internet you'll find several software transcription programs as well as hardware designed just for transcribing verbal material. Ask around. Other transcriptionists love to share their opinions with you. But,in the end just choose a program and headset that suits you and your financial situation. The program you choose will have settings to control the voice, and a headset to hear each word clearly. So, what else do you need to know before you decide to become a transcriptionist? Let's read on.

Now, ask yourself... do I have good listening skills, excellent grammar, and fast typing ability? If you answered "yes", then you might wonder what other skills you need. You should also be able to work well under time limits, be able to work independently for most of the time, and handle the repetition of typing, which can be a strain on the hands and wrists and the back from sitting for long periods of time. If that sounds like you, and you possess a sharp eye for detail, you are well on your way. With that said, let's look at some ideas to get you started in your home based transcription service.

Transcription Training: Getting started in the right direction will take some research. Look at some of the transcription training programs online as a start. Good training will give you good base of knowledge. You'll get more jobs because you have the knowledge and you know what you are talking about. Be sure to look at the resource at the end of this article, too.

Write a Business Plan: Just like every other money-making business, you will want to develop an outline of how and what services you plan to offer your clients. If you include your own personal vision for your business, you will have a clear picture of your mission and have a touchstone to refer to when you wish to re-energize your business. When you set up your marketing plan, financial plan, and growth plan, you will also prove you are serious about your business. While a banker won't need to look at it (since this business doesn't require any real capital to start) - this is for your reference only.

Your Home Office and Special Equipment: Let's start with your physical space, your home office. You should have a comfortable space to work, yes, but be sure it's quiet, too. Along with a good computer, you will want special transcription software, but, don't be afraid. There are programs to fit every financial situation. Start on the internet and research the computer programs and headsets available to you. Your computer program will allow you to reverse the document, move it forward, and manage the recording. You'll also have the ability to change settings for speed, volume, and tone, so don't worry that you won't get every word down accurately. Let's not forget the headset! Please do yourself a favor and invest in a great headset. The money spent now will save you a lot of frustration down the road. Being able to hear the spoken words easily, and understand the words without struggling, is priceless when you're trying to pump out documents on a deadline.

Marketing Yourself: Some people like to subscribe to national transcription companies so the work comes to them. However, if you are a good networker and like selling yourself, you may want to find your own clients and work directly with them. With podcasts popping up all over the internet - and teleseminars spreading like wildfire, you'll have a huge list of people to contact with your services.

Website For Your Business: Besides your hard work, your new and growing transcription business depends on a great website. Use it to let the outside world know that you are available and ready to work! You will be listing your services and letting clients know how to contact you. If website design is not your specialty, please hire someone to develop a professional website for you. The cost is minimal when compared to the client reaction you will get from happy testimonials and other client referrals. Keep in mind that your website is your professional face, so please save your personal or cutesy web stuff for the a personal blog. Your satisfied clients will always be ready and willing to refer other clients your way if you make your website easy for them to use and respond to.

Transcription services are in high demand in the US and according to the Department of Labor's statistics, transcriptionist jobs are growing at a higher than average rate. That's good to hear, right? By becoming a transcriptionist, you have found a work at home opportunity that is easily managed from your home office; a career which gives you an opportunity to grow at your own pace. And that seems like a very attractive opportunity indeed! Isn't it time you found out what all this transcription business fuss is about?
