Using Plants in Your Home Office Decor

By: Alyssa Davis

Decorating a home office can be a challenging task for a work-at-home mom. There are so many different ideas and decors that can work in a home office space, but finding the one that matches your personality and desires is not always easy. One sure thing to include in any home office decor is plants. Plants play an important role in design and there is no better place to put them than in your office.

Why They Are Important
Plants help break the cycle of closed minded, dull thinking. Their very presence makes for creativity and outside the box thinking. Whether it is because of their vibrant greens or their flowering nature, plants have a way of connecting the human mind and spirit to a more natural state. This is important for work-at-home moms because life outside of the home office can be so hectic that relaxing while sitting at your desk can be nearly impossible. It is a great way to add a calming influence to a space where you need to concentrate and focus. Adding plants also helps to keep the air in the home office cleaner. They are natural air filters and can help remove allergens from the air you breathe.

Size Matters
When you are thinking about adding plants to your home office, consider the available size and space that you have. While it may be tempting to line the windowsill with small flowerpots of African violets, it may not be the most practical place to put them should your cat be fond of taking a nap in that location. Large potted floor plants are always a great idea, but remember that they are heavy to move and can become a pain if you need to move them frequently. If your windows allow great light to enter the space, try using hanging plants in the window to add color and vitality to the space. However, if your room is dimly lit by natural light, you will need to either add artificial sunlight into the space, or make sure that the plants that you have require only the minimal amount of light.

Types of Plants
One of the most common mistakes when adding plants to a home office is choosing the wrong type of plant. Before you go shopping at the plant nursery, take a good look at your home office space throughout the day. Observe the varying amounts of natural light and make a note of it. When you go to the nursery, seek out expert advice. The nursery experts are usually happy to help you select the right plants for your lighting and space needs. Some popular types of plants include ficus trees, ferns, potted palms, spider plants and jade plants. All of them are relatively easy to care for and are fairly adaptable.

The next time you are thinking about what to add to your home office, consider plants for a truly unique look. All plants bring warmth and life into a space that translates into creativity, peace of mind, and mental stimulation. Those are things that any work-at-home mom definitely needs.
