Have you ever come out of a store and found a business card on your windshield? If you take the time to read the card and are left wondering, “I wonder what company put this here?” you’ve probably been left a sizzle card. Sizzle cards are void of company specific information. The cards are used as a teaser to get others to call. The only way to find out what company the card owner represents is to call and speak with the card owner. My experience with sizzle cards has not produced results and so I’ll share my thoughts both from the perspective of a sizzle card user and a potential customer. I’ll start with my experiences as a potential customer. There really is nothing more irritating than getting in my car, putting on my seat belt, putting the car in gear and then seeing a business card right in front of my face on the windshield. I now have to get out of the car, remove the card and then re-buckle in to pull out. What about the cards I see lying on the ground? It’s hard to be thankful to the person who used this paper and then had this paper lead to trash on our streets. My final irritation as a potential customer is the phone calls I’ve gotten over the years from those who “captured” my phone number. Even if you don’t leave a message, the card owner has your phone number (it’s been captured) and will often call you ready with their sales pitch reminding you that you did call them. As a sizzle card user, I found the sales call to be a very hard sale. I did often get others calling me with their own offers saying, “I saw your card and wondered if you have an open mind to other opportunities.” When I did return calls, quite often the person I was calling really was not looking to become involved in a network marketing company. The cards are designed to give very limited information, as I said above, just a “teaser” about earning more money. In order to get one new distributor, often you need to hand out at least 500 cards. This is a lot of cards and a lot of cold calling with very little payback. When people do call and don’t leave a message, you are left having to decide if you ignore the fact they called or make a very cold call saying, “I saw on my caller ID that you called for information on a business card you found.” I believe there are other, more effective ways to market your business, which are also healthier for our environment.
