There are basically four styles of baby carriers when it comes to carrying your baby close to you. Front Carrier: Front carriers are perfect for outings so you can carry around your newborn or infant that cannot hold their head up. Most front carriers have a bit of padding and structure so your baby is held in a secure position next to the parent’s body. Being in the front allows you to care for them while still out and about. You can even sit with many of them on and feed your baby. Backpack: Backpacks are for the older baby to toddler stage. Backpacks tend to carry babies that are sitting up on their own but probably aren’t walking well into the toddler years. Again this type of baby carrier is for being out and about. Shopping, hiking, just taking a walk are perfect examples. Backpacks are very structured so make sure you find the right fit for your frame. Baby backpacks are designed to transfer baby’s weight to your hips and reduce the strain on your back. Baby Sling: I love baby slings. The most versatile of the bunch, baby slings, are like tiny hammocks wrapping your infant in comfort. The best thing about slings is that because there is a variety of ways your baby can be positioned in them most slings can carry your baby well into the toddler years. Most parents like slings for the freedom it gives them in the home while having baby very close by. Seen all across the world in various cultures slings have just caught on in the last 10 years or so in the US. There are so many baby slings on the market that it may take some browsing but most likely you won’t be sorry once you make a decision. Baby Wraps: These are on my wish list. Much like a sling in the versatility and style baby wraps carry your baby even more securely against your body but in an upright position. These are much like the front baby carriers but with a more natural less structured feel. Whatever you choose remember...you can always buy more than one kind.
