What Loving Yourself Means

By: Chandra Alexander

We’ve all heard the saying “You can’t love anyone else until you love yourself”. And although many of us believe this is true, few of us have any idea how to really do it. If you really want to know what loving yourself means and how to do it, read on.

1. Loving yourself is the same as taking care of yourself.

· Do you know how to take care of yourself the same way you would take care of someone you really loved and cared about?

· Are you willing to go the extra mile and do the work to make sure you are going to be okay?

· So often we are willing to do for someone else what we are not willing to do for ourselves.

2. Do not continually to do things you do not want to do. Figure out what you like.

· Doing what you do not want to do will build resentment and make you angry.

· You cannot love yourself if you are angry all the time.

· Spend some time thinking about you. It is not selfish; it is wise. Unless you KNOW what makes YOU feel good, you cannot take care of yourself.

3. Set boundaries – they build self-respect and self-esteem.

· Boundaries say, “I know who I am and I know what makes me feel good and I am willing to stand up for those things.”

· Boundaries allow YOU to set the pace. So often we get on someone else’s timeline and end up making decisions that are not in our best interest.

· Boundaries make us feel safe. They delineate the space in which we feel comfortable and allow us to proceed at our own rate of speed.

4. Do not settle for immediate gratification of needs - go for the gold!

· Going for immediate gratification always cuts us short. Look at the big picture and decide if a momentary feeling is worth a lifelong bad decision.

· For example, sometimes we have strong sexual chemistry with someone but know that person is bad for us. Can you walk away from someone you know is bad for you, even though you have this strong attraction? This is what loving yourself is all about.

5. Let someone love you.

· We often hear, “You can’t love anyone else until you love your Self,” but someone once said, “You can’t love yourself, until someone else loves you.”

· When I heard that, I cried.
