What You Can Expect With Folded Postcards

By: Colleen Davis

Folded postcards are quite different from traditional postcards in many ways. You can expect a lot of different things from those folded postcards that you won’t otherwise see in other common configurations. If you don’t know about these folded postcards yet, then let me tell you truly what you can expect from them. There are five things you should be prepared for or know about in printing folded postcards.

1. More room to design – Of course, you should expect more room to design in, when it comes to custom folded postcards. You are basically doubling the area of your postcards when you invest in folded postcard printing. So you should try to plan out an extensive design that can really take advantage of that extra space. Most people plan on extended designs that pass through the folds and the dimensions of the postcard panels, flowing the elements into each other. There are plenty of creative possibilities. So you should be ready with your creative imagination when printing folded postcards.

2. More room for content – You should also know that with folded postcards, you have more room for content. So besides that initial content at the cover, you can also add extra content at the inside postcard panels as well as the back. So you should expect the need to compose more content for folded postcards. You can add in more specialized content for the postcard, like extra marketing information, a more personal letter or message, or maybe even extra graphics. You will not want to waste the extra space with only design elements right? So take advantage of the extra area of folded postcards and compose more quality content.

3. Extra printing costs – Now here is the bad thing about folded postcards. They basically will cost more. Twice the area to print means almost twice the cost in postcards. Typically, you will be facing a 50-80% increase in printing costs when you want to invest in folded postcards. So make sure that you prepare some extra funds when printing folded postcards. It might be a downer, but believe me, it is well worth every penny since folded postcards can really be quite effective.

4. Specialized printers – Folded postcards will of course need specialized printers to be produced. Not all postcard printing companies can print folded business cards with extra flaps. So expect the need to search through many postcard printers to get the right kind of folded postcards that you need. I suggest going online for your search because it is a lot faster to browse through and judge postcard printers this way. Just make sure you choose the right one with the right cost for you in folded postcard printing.

5. Tendency of the inside content to be ignored – Lastly, you should expect the tendency of readers for the inside content to be ignored in folded postcards. People usually expect postcards to be a single piece of paper with no folds or flaps. So when they receive folded postcards, some of them may actually accidentally ignore the inside of the content. Always expect this to happen. You should just try to remedy it by telling the readers at the cover or at the back to “read more inside”. Once they know something else is inside the folds, your postcard mission should be secured.

So those are the things you will likely expect in postcard printing. Take note of these once you decide on printing your postcards this way.
