WAHMspiration By Ruth

In my new book, The Lion Tree, the hero faces a huge obstacle he needs to overcome. The main character, Darian, and his siblings face many setbacks and it looks like they will never  accomplish what they have set out to do. But someone shows up to guide Darian  through it and to remind Darian to always practice faith, hope, and love.  I can’t tell you anymore without giving the ending away.

Life is like that too. Sometimes we face great obstacles. Sometimes it’s a problem in our work or personal life. Sometimes it is an illness. Sometimes the problem is our fault, but often not. We do our best to overcome them but sometimes they don’t go away, at least not for a long time. Some people just quit and give up.

So how can practicing faith, hope, and love help us find success in our home businesses?  First, we need faith in ourselves and in our ability to succeed. Often we need a mentor,  someone who knows us and encourages us when we hit a roadblock. They tell us we can do it and show us how. My faith was in God as I wrote my story, but I had a great mentor in my daughter, Denise. She was my cheerleader and editor.

We need hope to be successful. We have done our research and discovered there is a market for what we provide. We have talked with other entrepreneurs and seen their success. We made a plan and are following it. We keep acquiring knowledge to better our business skills. Now we continue to hope that all our efforts will bring success. If we didn’t have hope, we probably wouldn’t continue.

Then there is love. You might wondering how love applies to business. Besides being  courteous and treating your business contacts professionally, practicing love in your business can make a big difference.

It's possible to find success if you're in business just to make money. But when you operate your business in order to meet the needs of others, it can be superb.

If you practice love in your business, you’re in business for others and not for yourself. You'll find a niche that meets people’s needs and provide that service for them, and your business will flourish. You not only make money but you are helping someone too, and that can give you a deep sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

That's the law of giving and receiving: When we give, we always receive much, much more in return.

Blessings,

Ruth Willms

Tragedy and Kids - Talking to Kids About Difficult Topics by Mardie Caldwell, C.O.A.P.

In the recent months and years we have been faced with extreme issues of tragedy: the attacks of 9/11, the tsunami in Asia, and the extreme floods in New Orleans. It is hard enough for us as adults to understand these tragedies; for children they can be extremely overwhelming. But children do not just look at large disasters like these as tragedies; sometimes, simple things in their lives are tragic to them, even if we as adults don't view them that way. Continue...

Activity of the Week by Ruth

Where is the Mouse?

Children love to look for things. They love the surprise factor. So why not incorporate it into their learning activities? This game is a wonderful way to teach your child or class of children the different colors. They will be wondering which house that mouse is hiding in but of course you won’t let them look in the house unless they can tell you the color first. Then when they find the mouse it will be their turn to hide it so you or another child can guess where it.

Materials you will need to make the game:

  • Construction paper of the eight different colors; red, blue, yellow, green, orange, brown, purple, and black. The size depends on how big you want the house to be.

  • Gray, or brown paper; whatever color you want the mouse to be

  • Colored markers or crayons or pencil crayons.

  • Child size scissors.

To make the houses:

Have your child draw a house on each different colored sheet of paper so you have a red house, a blue house, a yellow house, a green house, an orange house, a brown house, a purple house and a black house. Have your child cut out the houses.

Draw and cut out a mouse.

To play the game:

Lay the houses on the table or other flat surface. Ask your child to cover his eyes with his hands; no peeking. Hide the mouse under one of the houses. Tell your child he can look now. Then say, “Where is the mouse?” Have him say the color of the house he thinks the mouse is hiding in. Lift up the house he indicated. If the mouse is there say “Got you, mouse!” If he guessed wrong and the mouse is not there have him guess another color until he guesses the right color of house where the mouse is hiding. Now it is his turn to hide the mouse and your turn to guess.

This activity will help your child learn and practice several skills. He will identify the eight colors. He will create different designs of house shapes. He will cut along a designated line. He will practice his skill at handling scissors. He will also practice his social skills of waiting for his turn and interacting with you and other children as you include them in the game. Most of all he will feel the sense of accomplishment and closeness with you, his caregiver. Have Fun!
