In Search of Self Worth
Built within each of us is a deep need for self worth. We desire to be loved and accepted. Often that need governs our behavior and is the primary source of all our emotional pain. So explains Robert S. McGee in his astounding book
The Search for Significance
.
We devour self help books looking for ways to heal our wounds. We try to fix ourselves for God when God wants us to come to Him so He can grow us into His image.
How to Get Your Novel Off to a Running Start
If you have ever attempted to write a novel, you like me, have grappled with the best way to start. The beginning is the most important part of the book. Here are some tips to get your story off to a running start.
Preparing Velcro Children for Separation
Do you have a Velcro child? We’re OK with Velcro on these items but we don’t want to encourage Velcro children. Velcro children are the kind that stick to you like a burr when you try to drop them off at playschool or any other place. Learn how to prepare your Velcro child for separation.
Guardian Angels
I have a picture of an angel in our spare bedroom where our grandchildren sleep when they come to visit. The artist depicts the angel with gold colored long hair and a long floppy white shining dress. Huge white shimmering wings loom up behind his shoulders. They remind me of eagle wings. The angel’s eyes are focused on two young children, a boy and girl, as he escorts them across a rickety bridge. The dilapidated bridge resembles a wooden sidewalk suspended in air. A board is missing just behind the children and a broken pole at its side is all there is for a railing.
Those Little White Lies - Devotional for Children
There is no such thing as a little white lie. There is no such thing as a little sin. Either it is sin, or it isn’t. Either it is a lie, or it isn’t.
Cheating is a lie. When you copy someone else’s work and let your teacher think it is your work that is cheating. You are deceiving your teacher.
Making God Real to Your Children
Here are some ways you can make God real to your children.
Why do we get jealous?
Do you ever get jealous? You know, that feeling that creeps over you when someone else gets exactly what you want but your parents say they can’t afford it right now. Or it’s how you might feel when you work so hard in school but the kid across the aisle gets an A plus and you get a C. You might feel a bit of jealousy when you really wanted to make the team but you weren’t chosen; yet that kid, that you don’t think is that great, got chosen instead.
Learning about Jesus and His His Extraordinary Birth
Jesus had a very special birth. Jesus lived in heaven with his Father, God. But Jesus was also God.
Explaining Salvation to Your Kids
"I demand that you love each other as much as I love you.
“And here is how to measure it – the greatest love is shown when a person lays down his life for his friends
"And you are my friends if you obey me." John 15: verses 12, 13 and 14 [The Living Bible]
What Does God Have to Say About Bullying?
Everybody in the world has some kind of problem. Rich people, people in powerful positions, like the president of the United States, the popular athletic kid in your school... and even the person who's bullying you.
How Can I Like My Teacher If He Doesn’t Like Me?
Do you ever wonder if your teacher doesn’t like you? Do you ever think he or she is being very hard on you? How can you like a teacher who isn't fair to you?
Second Chances - Christian Devotional for Children
Have you ever messed something up? Something that was very important and you didn’t get a chance to fix it or try again? That really hurt, didn’t it?
Sometimes we make wrong decisions because we don’t have all the facts. Often we don’t get a chance to try again; at least not for awhile, and we have to live with the consequences of our poor choice.
The Merciful Fisherman - Devotional for Children
Alberta is one of the lucky Canadian provinces to have a family holiday in February. Our family took advantage of it on Monday and spent the day ice-fishing.
Jesus Loves You
You might wonder if God really cares much about you. After all, He has all these rules outlined in the Bible, like the commandments. Rules like, we must not covet. That’s a hard one. When our best friend scores all the goals in hockey and we have a bad day, it is hard not to wish we were like him. Or our best friend aces the test and we get a C; how can we not be jealous and not want that A plus for ourselves?
Hiding God’s Word in Our Hearts - Devotional for Kids
How can we store God’s Word in our heart? We can do that by memorizing it. You might think ‘but that’s too hard’ or ‘I don’t have time for that’. Actually it comes down to your attitude.
Why should I pray? Devotional for Children
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs and don’t forget to thank him for his answers.
If you do this you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6and 7 The Living Bible
Can You Hear God? Devotional for Children
When I read about Adam and Eve in the Bible I used to get jealous. I thought they were lucky to talk to God and He would answer them right away. That must have been so cool.
My Hero, Daniel! A Devotional for Kids
Who is your hero? Who is there in your life that you think the world of and want to be just like him? Maybe it’s an imaginary character like Harry Potter or Superman or Iginla, the Calgary Flames hockey captain. You want their powers so you can control your life and even the lives of others. I think at sometimes we all want to play God.
Brave Queen Esther - Christian Devotional for Kids and Parents
“And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.” Esther 4:16
Haman, the villain in the book of Esther, was above all the princes in the land and everyone had to bow to him. But Mordecai, Queen Esther’s uncle, would not bow to him. Maybe Mordecai saw it as false worship, dishonoring God. Haman hated Mordecai for not showing him honor.
These High, Green Hills
This is the third book in the Mitford series but it doesn’t matter if you haven’t read the first two books. This volume is a good read on its own. Beware: you might become addicted to the Mitford small town warmth and have to read the next book in the series and the next and the next, as I did.
Do Not Be Afraid- Children's Devotional Based on Psalm 91
There are many things that can make even God’s children afraid. We should be afraid of some things and make sure we protect ourselves from them. The Bible says we should avoid evil companions. It’s important to choose good friends because we become like the people we surround ourselves with. We should be afraid of addictions to the point that we avoid using harmful substances like drugs. We should fear the consequences of breaking our country’s laws and our parents’ rules.
Teaching Kids the True Meaning of Christmas - The Christmas Story in Prophecy
Did you know that the prophets in the Old Testament foretold Jesus' coming thousands of years before it happened? It's true!
Creating Christmas Traditions with Your Family
There are many Christmas traditions you can build with your kids. Here are a few ideas.
Celebrating Advent with Your Preschooler
Setting up an advent wreath in the house is a wonderful way to show your children that Christ holds first place in your house at Christmas. You can create one at the beginning of December and light a candle each Sunday. You can also do this project on Christmas Eve and light all the candles on Christmas Eve.
Making the Bible Real to Your Children
I remember as a child, gathering in a circle in our huge dining room for family devotions. My dad, ever the Bible teacher, sat in the circle with us. Our family consisted of sixteen individuals: Dad, Mom and fourteen children. However, the time I’m remembering, two of my siblings were already married and another two were living on their own. Still, among the ten siblings present, there was a wide age range from about four years of age to twenty three. Yet, I think my dad presented Bible truths so each one understood and found it interesting.
Foot Painting
Children love to paint. While painting they are in control. They can choose the colors they want and they can paint any scene they desire. The colors and flowing movements of painting can be very calming to the child. Foot painting might be more of a challenge to them than the usual brush method.
Making a Friendship Collage
Having a true friend is a wonderful thing. We can help our child make good friends by teaching them to be a good friend. We can also teach them to be a friend to the needy or friendless child. When you call the other child’s parents ask them to have some pictures available that their child has chosen. The children can then make each others pictures into a collage and keep them to remind them of their new friend.
Good Feelings; Bad Feelings
Just like us, their parents and grandparents, a child has mixed emotions. One minute he can feel giddy with happiness and the next he can be crying over a broken toy. Making “feeling finger puppets” with your child and then helping him identify his feelings is a good way to help him understand and accept his emotions.
A Mother's Day Gift
Following is the history of Mother's Day and a simple but very meaningful gift for children to make for their mother on Mother’s Day. Of course, if you're a mother reading this article, you will want to share it with your child’s father or other caregiver as a hint for your Mother’s Day gift.
Where is the Mouse?
Children love to look for things. So why not incorporate it into their learning activities?
This game is a wonderful way to teach your child or class of children the different colors. They will be wondering which house that mouse is hiding in but of course you won’t let them look in the house unless they can tell you the color first. Then when they find the mouse it will be their turn to hide it so you or another child can guess where it is.
Learn About Plants with Preschoolers
Spring is here! However, depending on where you live it may not look very much like spring outdoors. In our Canadian prairies spring comes late. Winnipeg still has lots of snow and here in Calgary it is still too cold to plant gardens outdoors. We are fortunate there are many ways to enjoy gardening indoors.
In this experiment we will learn what plants need to grow and be healthy.
Between the Pampers and the Pablum
New parents often feel overwhelmed by the needs of their newly born infant. Advertising and advice abounds in helping them meet their baby’s physical needs, such as having a good supply of pampers and pablum on hand. However, they are often unaware of the important socialization role they must play to develop trust, competence, and a sense of security in their young child to carry him through life. Not until years after my children past infancy and I returned to college to study Early Childhood Education did I learn to understand child development. It was too late for my children but not for my grandchildren. I found it fascinating and encourage new parents and grandparents to educate themselves in this area.
Your Child's Self-Esteem and Self-Image
In being a work at home mom you are fortunate to be the primary person developing your own child as you care and interact with him throughout the day. You have the wonderful opportunity of teaching him the values that are important to you.
