House Cleaning Tips

By: Amber Bishop

An organized house is the goal of every woman whether working in the home or out of the home. The question is how to manage the task that can be at times very overwhelming, especially once you throw kids into the equation. As with any task, a detailed plan will help you accomplish your goal, stay on task and maintain consistency. In the following few paragraphs I will outline a system that I have used to maintain our home while home schooling, working at home and raising three energetic, inquisitive children under the age of 6.

So how, do you ask, have I cracked this nut? Firstly, laundry. You have no idea what you need to clean if you have to wade through loads of laundry to find what you need. Less stuff to wash is helpful. Sort every person in your family’s clothes. Throw away stained, torn or unusable clothing. Save special pieces, or pieces that may be passed down, and in plastic bens that can be stored under the bed. Then go to work at whittling down your family's primary clothing choices to about 8-10 outfits that fit well, are clean and free of stains or holes. This will help you keep your amount of laundry that needs to be done manageable. I typically do one small load of laundry a day, dry it, fold it and put it away the same day. This maintains, clean closets and drawers and helps your family find what they need quickly. No stress in the morning looking for clothes in laundry baskets or on the floors is a very good thing!

Most families keep up with picking up their home but find it hard to fit in the deep cleaning consistently. Typically families leave it all for one weekend every once in awhile which produces needless stress in a busy families life. The best way to efficiently tackle deep cleaning is to break your home into zones. Calculate how many days a week you want to clean and how many sections you have in your home. I clean 4-5 days a week for about 30 minutes a day. Kitchen one day, living room and half bath another, kids rooms and hallway the third, upstairs bathrooms the 4th and the master the 5th. Once you establish a rhythm, you can tweak it a bit or add a few extra elements, like dusting the blinds or base boards every once in awhile. This takes only moments a day, and leaves your house in a generally clean state at all times. There is no one place that gets too dirty and you do not have to stress about unexpected visitors or tha extra needed money for the cleaning lady.

Get your kids involved in the process. When they are age appropriate (which is probably earlier than most think) give them responsibilities around the home. Sorting laundry or putting their clothes away. The sooner you take control of the mess in your home, the sooner, you will find your life freeing up to do other things because you have done the “dirty work” a little bit every day. Now your weekends can be reserved for family fun.
