Each month, network marketing expert Katie Forrest answers the most common or interesting questions she has received from people around the world. Is it possible to build a successful biz part-time? Katie says: The short answer is yes! However, there are a couple of words in your question that have very different meanings for different people: "successful" and "part-time". Firstly, let's explore the idea of being successful. Depending who you speak to, success may mean an extra $100 a month or a yacht paid for in cash! The great thing, though, is that network marketing makes all definitions of success achievable. Now, is your idea of success possible part-time? Maybe. If you are limited by either work or family commitments to only being able to build your business on a part-time basis, you will need to be extremely disciplined. I'd advise that you develop excellent time management skills and become extremely organised if you're not already. Schedule your part-time hours in your day planner religiously, as if you were going out to a regular part-time job. And plan each week exactly how you will spend that time. If you remain committed and action-focused, you will be able to progress with your business and provide a nice, steady income. At that point, if you want to get that yacht!, you may decide to use the income you've already created to give up your job or hire a nanny so you can focus on your business full-time. Good luck! Why do so many people fail in network marketing? Katie says: Good question, and one with a very easy answer. People fail because they give up. As Norman Vincent Peale said, "It's always too soon to quit!" It is not a lack of ability that prevents people succeeding in their network marketing business, it is a lack of commitment that leads to them giving up before they have allowed themselves to really succeed. Don't give up! What is a good book for someone new to network marketing to read? Katie says: One of the first books I read when I joined by company remains my favourite. It is Your First Year In Network Marketing by Mark and Rene Reid Yarnell. Enjoy! What piece of advice would you give to new network marketers that they maybe haven't heard before? Katie says: I would urge all new network marketers to find the contact details for the most successful person in their company and get in touch with them. I did this in my first week with my company and the person I contacted has become my mentor and a close friend - his advice and the pure inspiration of his life and his story has been invaluable to me. A lot of people are scared to introduce themselves to the successful people in their company, which is silly. These people have been where you are, have encountered the problems you will encounter, and have a wealth of information and advice that they can share with you. Even if all the person does is add you to their training mailing list, what a great resource you have tapped into! Don't be scared! Is a free business opportunity really free? Katie says: A free business opportunity could be free, but I haven't heard of any millionaires who have never spent a penny on their business. If you are serious about your success, you have to invest in it. Just as you wouldn't expect to start a franchise for free, don't undervalue yourself and your network marketing business by not spending money on it. As a bare minimum you will need to buy business cards and pay for telephone calls and printing costs. It's also advisable to pay for your own professional website and email address. You will spend money on gas and resources such as books and your day planner. Remember, this is a business. It costs money to set up and get off the ground. Don't try to avoid those costs, you will look unprofessional and potential customers may go to your competitors instead! Open that purse! That's all for this month.
