4 Simple Ways To Improve Your Garage Sale Pricing

By: Darlyn Burkle

Garage sales are a great way to get your house cleaned up and clutter free, and they are also a way to make some money. How you price your items will determine how well your garage sale goes. In this article, I will give you four garage sale pricing tips.

1. Know what to expect

Know what you expect to get out of the garage sale. If you are having the sale to make some extra money, you will want to have good quality items for sale. You will be able to put a higher price tag on items such as computers, TV's or musical instruments and other such items. But if your goal is to clean out the garage or the attic and get rid of unwanted stuff, you will want to sell it for a cheaper price. You will also want to be willing to negotiate the price to get the sale.

2. Use the 10% Rule

Garage sale pricing, can be difficult. A good rule of thumb on pricing your garage sale items would be charging 10% of what you paid for it. So if you paid $30.00, a good price would be $3.00. You may also want to raise your price by about .50-.75 cents, so if someone wants to negotiate the price, you will still be happy with the money you make on the sale. When you use these garage sale pricing tips, you will be able negotiate with people and they will feel like they are getting a great deal and will more than likely make the purchase. They may also buy more because you were willing to work with them.

3. Offer sale packages

If you are selling a lot of "like" items, it wouldn't be a bad idea to bundle them up. For instance, if you are trying to sell 5 old books, you could sell all five of them for one price. It's also a good idea to do this with sets instead of pricing them separately. Pricing items like this at your garage sale will ensure that you won't be left with one or two items that you don't want. People will appreciate it when you do this because they may not have known the items should have gone together.

4. Offer last minute discounts

Towards the end of the day, if you still have items left, you may want to consider marking them half off the marked price. Make up some signs on bright colored poster board that you can put on a busy street to attract customers. They could say something like: ½ off Sale, or Everything Must Go!! When you have customers, don't be afraid to go talk to them and try to get that sale. When the sale is over, load everything up that didn't sell and donate it to your local Good Will or Lion's Club.

Garage sales can be a lot of fun, especially when you make some money off of it and you get your house clutter free in the process. When you remember these garage sale pricing tips you will always have good results. If you follow these garage sale pricing tips the only thing you should have to worry about is the weather! Good Luck!
