Childhood Obesity

By: Sally Romero

Childhood obesity has become an epidemic. In the last three decades, obesity rates in children and teens tripled from 6% to nearly 19%. Obese children tend to become obese adults which adds to health insurance costs and an overall burden to society at large.

Obesity results from eating more calories than the body is able to use. Some overweight issues are caused by genetics but most can be attributed to habit and behavior. Obese children are at great risk for cardiovascular diseases such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure, as well as sleep apnea, joint problems and diabetes.

There is also the psychological damage that obesity brings, such as being mocked and ostracized by peers. This often leads to poor self-esteem as well as depression in the long term and increases the probability of lifelong obesity, as depressed adults often overeat as a way to relieve stress.

Increases in childhood obesity are not just in the United States but are being found worldwide. This has been attributed somewhat to the digital age but mostly to the availability of high-fat fast food. Most disturbing is the increase in average body weight in Asia, which used to have one of the most height-weight proportionate populations. More Asian children are indulging in fatty burgers and fries rather than the sensible vegetable and rice meals of the past.

Obesity in children can be avoided or eased by adherence to a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, as well as an increase in physical activity. These steps can be challenging in the digital age as many children choose to spend their time in front of computers or playing video games. Parents can set a good example by limiting the computer activities and playing and/or exercising with their children. They can also help their children by preparing healthy meals together and making the process fun.

A study done in Australia with 1800 children between ages two and 12 showed that a diet consisting of no sweets or soda and inceased exercise showed an average 1 kilogram weight loss compared to a control group. Other effects of the strict diet showed a decrease in television viewing and more interest and participation in extracurricular activities.

The best way to avoid childhood obesity is for parents to teach healthy eating and exercise habits from the very beginning. Children who start life being active are more likely to remain that way into adulthood and also teach their children how to be healthy, as well. Some studies have shown a link between inadequate sleep and a higher likelihood of obesity. An active child will have no trouble sleeping and a rested child is more likely to want to go out and play.

Even if a child is already overweight, it's never too late for parents to step in and facilitate change.
