Christian Living And The Importance Of An Inter-Generational Family

By: Marcia Chumbley

Intergenerational relationships can best be defined as interactions that take place between people of different generations. The inter-generational family is an important aspect of the Christian family as it is often the older generations that are responsible for ensuring that precious past down family traditions remain intact. These traditions preserve the lineage and heritage of the Christian family and are the basis for lifelong customs that will continually be passed down from generation to generation. There is no question that inter-generational relationships are the heart and soul of Christian family and home life.

Generations of living family members have a significant impact on the structural core of the Christians family. As today’s seniors are living longer more vibrant lives, the wealth of knowledge that they can give to younger family members is vast. In turn, many of today’s Christian youth are taking these core values to heart and are learning that they are never too young to have an impact in change. Giving back to community through charitable acts, time, and church events are becoming commonplace in many Christian families and churches. The exchange that takes place from generation to generations are learning tools that are key to making certain that younger generations appreciate the contributions that seniors have made to society as a whole.

There is no better place to experience the benefits of inter-generational exchanges then in the Christian family. Children should always be encouraged to spend quality time with their grandparents and in many Christian homes; children are spending time with grandparents on a daily basis. Many Boomers provide childcare for their grandchildren and have a first hand avenue for sharing traditions and customs.

However, for those who do not see their grandparents regularly, it cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to strengthen and nurture these relationships. There are basically five generations of living members in the world today. First, there is the G.I. Generation. The G.I. Generation was born between 1901 and 1926. They experienced the Great Depression and can share realities of life that the younger generations can only marvel at. The Silents were born between 1927 and 1945. The oldest of the Silents are in their eighties, this generation has valuable information to pass down to the younger generations as they are the link to the G.I. Generation. Every Christian family should take the time to ensure that the memories and life experiences of the Silents and the G.I. Generation are preserved and remembered.

Next are the Boomers. The Boomers were born between 1927 and 1945. Today’s Boomers are taking the world by storm. They are effective voices of change and are the first generation to approach their senior years with renewed health, vigor, and impressive financial security. Boomers carry the traditions of many of the Silents who have passed and are the bridge between Generation Xers and the Millenials (Generation Xers were born between 1965 and 1981 and Millenials were born from 1982 until the present day. It is important for Christian families to spend quality time together with all generations involved. This is the most effective way to ensure that each member understands the importance of other generations.
