From Stay-at-Home Mom to Writer

By: Jessica Ackerman

Many moms (and lots of dad, too) are happy to learn that they can actually make a decent living by working from home. We are not talking about stuffing envelopes or any of those types of “scam” positions that are not really jobs. There are honest-to-goodness real jobs out there that you can do completely, 100% from the comfort of your own home. Yes, you CAN have a twenty-second commute. Writing is one of those jobs.
Why Writing?
Writing is one skill that you can learn, but in all honesty, by the time you reach adulthood or graduate from college, you have likely absorbed all that you need in order to be an effective writer. You either have the knack for putting words together or you don’t. Many people tap into this skill and make a living out of it, right from home. Not everyone can write for a living. After all, everyone is not “cut out” for everything, right? Perhaps you can’t sing, you have two left feet and a black thumb instead of a green one. But you have a way with words. Sure, you won’t win a Grammy, you will never be chosen as a backup dancer for your favorite rock star, and you probably won’t win any awards with your gardening prowess. Nonetheless, if you like your writing, then chances are good that other people may, too.
What Can I Write?
Look around the internet and you will quickly see that it is filled with tons of written content. Someone had to write all that! That someone could be you. There are many different content needs out there, from website content to informative articles to e-books and sales letters, press releases, product descriptions, and even the meta-tags that show up when a page turns up in a Google search. All of these are good examples of content that somebody had to write. When searching for writing jobs, look for those content requests that are centered on some subject that you are familiar with or comfortable with. The more you know about something, the better and more compelling you can write on that subject.
Where are These Jobs?
There are a number of good venues for finding writing jobs. One of the best is Odesk.Com. On this site, you can find jobs for remote positions ranging from web development to voice over – as well as writing gigs. A similar site, Elance.Com, works in almost the same way that Odesk.Com works, and has similar job postings. A relative newcomer for freelance writers is TheContentAuthority.Com. This site allows writers to select one article assignment at a time, and they offer a diversity of payment schedules that writers build up to by providing error-free and engaging content.
How Much Can I Make?
When it comes to freelance writing, there is no average wage or set fee for an article. On Odesk.Com, for example, article budgets start on the low end at around $4 per 500-word article and run up to $50 for a similarly sized article. The price paid is based on your skill and how much the client is willing to pay for your services.
Bottom line: if you enjoy writing, you can make a decent living working from home, doing what you like. After all, if you enjoy your work, you really never work a day your entire life!
