How to Use Digg as a Marketing Tool

By: Mercedes Aspland

Social bookmarking as a whole as a whole is growing rapidly in popularity. Digg is probably the biggest social bookmarking site out there so getting your content seen on it can be invaluable. The aim of this article is to help you get the most out of your Digg marketing campaign.

The first thing to say and probably the most important is that Digg has not been designed as a marketing tool. The aim is that it is an information resource for people to find useful websites. However there are many things you can do to get your site seen on Digg.

What is Digg?

Basically, Digg is a social bookmarking site, as mentioned before. This manes that people will join, make accounts and set up profiles. Then when they find a site that they like they can add it to their list of sites and create a review on it. The more people you get to Digg your web pages the easier they will be to find on the site and the more popular they appear. This is also important to your search engine rankings as Google will take into account the number of Diggs your site has to determine how useful it is.

How to Get Seen on Digg

Once you have joined Digg and set up your profile you need to work on getting your content seen by other people. The first thing to remember is that Digg is a popularity site so getting your site high up is a bit like a popularity contest. So in order to get your site seen you need to know a lot of people on Digg and get them to recommend your site.

It is important to know that Digg is not a closed community and so new people can be accepted as a valuable member of the community. However you will need to put in a lot of work to earn the respect of the users of Digg. As mentioned before Digg is not a marketing tool and so you cannot simple post pages from your website. You should aim to post interesting content that others will be interested in. You should then go out and try and make friends, comment on other people’s posts. If they like what you are doing you will become accepted. You will then be able to get your new friends to Digg your website, just by asking.

Top ways to Do Well on Digg

Below is a list of the top ways to get seen on Digg:

1. Don’t put any blog names or sections in the title. You just need to include the title of the post.

2. Make your description appealing. It is a good idea to practice this and the more you do the better your will get. It can be a good idea to keep your description down to 150 characters, including the link.

3. Submit it to the relevant category. If you are trying to get noticed try and post all of your posts to the same topic and just the one topic. This will allow you to be specific and get in touch with the people you will be interested in your website.

4. Stay within the topic you are posting to. Think of each topic as a niche market, in order to target your content you need to make sure your posts are relevant.

5. Make your Posts interesting. If you are posting a lot of boring content that people won’t really want to read you will not be building up the reputation you want. The more interesting content you post the more people will want to read everything you post.

Above is just a list to get your started and although it might be hard work at first once you are comfortable with what you are doing you can get to enjoy. Once you have built up a valuable profile you might find a lot of traffic coming to your site from Digg.
